Unspoken Promises
"I already graduated from Harvard. I just wanted to learn from different institutions. Oxford wasn’t my first choice, but they offered me a generous scholarship. I couldn’t pass that up. I’ll only be here a year or two."
"Oh? No boyfriend waiting back home?" she presses, her tone laced with judgment. "A pretty girl like you shouldn’t have trouble finding a man. Or maybe you’ve got a few. You Americans and your loose morals."
I exhale sharply but keep my tone calm. "Abby," I say, meeting her gaze, "I’m not sure what I did to earn that attitude, but I don’t appreciate it. No, I don’t have a boyfriend, or a lineup of them waiting back home. I’m only eighteen, and I’ve never had one. I’ve been t
