When I turned it around, I saw my name and my address. My heart beats nervously. Last I remember, I didn’t have any pen pals. Could this just be another subscription letter then? I almost tore through the envelope out of curiosity, but sadly, my curiosity just gets even stronger when I am met with a blank piece of white paper. I flip it around, but there’s nothing. Literally no words, not even a small mark on the paper. It’s completely empty. What the hell? Is this some kind of sick joke?

“All I knew about romance and love was from the movies and books. “We wrote each other back and forth like that for the next year or more. Mel wouldn’t tell me about the war and mostly asked about how things were for me at home. I’d send him care packages with books and things. I was heart sick the entire time and bursting to tell someone, but I kept our secret. I told my parents I’d signed up to be a pen pal to a serviceman so they didn’t ask any questions.

“I’d be happy being your friend. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wanted something more. I find you fascinating, Lily. I just wanted to let you know how I feel so that there is no misunderstanding between us.” He gives a card with his email address and phone number. “In the meantime, if you ever need a friend,” I take his card, and his smile grows wider, “Don’t hesitate to call me, okay? Send me a text. Write to me. We can be penpals.” “Penpals who kiss one another?” “Only if you want me to,” his voice grows a bit deeper and his gaze is almost too intense. Whatever he is promising isn’t something fickle or fleeting.

"Stephen, how can you treat me like this?" For years, Stephen had been Joey's rock. Whenever they disagreed, Joey would bring up the past, and Stephen would always cave. While she was still editing the message, she received a friend request on Facebook. [Caleb Fergerson sent you a friend request.] Penny was taken aback. She was surprised that Caleb took the initiative to add her. However, she immediately realized her contact information was in her photo. Penny quickly sat up straight and accepted the request. I opened the envelope and in it sat a letter. I read the content and discovered that it was a request letter. Turns out someone wanted to be friends with me and was extending an invitation to be my pen pal. I never knew that a silly friendship letter would make me so happy. I kept reading it all night, again and again until I could practically recite it word for word. The letter said that if I wanted to continue the friendship, I could write a reply and put it on my desk. I wanted to experience what it felt like to have a pen pal so I said what they asked me to, wrote a reply, and left it on my desk.
