Once my Wife
She sang as she painted in the living room, her hair messy with streaks of color, her giggles filling every corner.
“Daddy, look!” she said one afternoon, holding up a bright picture of a bird rising into the sky.
Jason knelt down, studying it. “That’s beautiful, sweetheart. What is it?”
“A phoenix,” she declared proudly. “Like Mommy said. It means starting over. It means flying higher.”
Jason’s throat tightened. He pulled her close, kissing her hair. “That’s exactly right.”
Bella watched them, tears shining in her eyes. For the first time in years, she felt truly safe.
