The tunnel was brick along one wall and a thin piece of drywalls on the other. It wasn't a very high ceiling. My head nearly skimmed the top so l knew someone like Cain would have to duck when walking down the tunnel. I wondered for a moment if Cain knew about the tunnels. I assumed he did, seeing as he'd lived in the castle his whole life. I began to walk down the tunnel. They take on the voices of the damned, whispering hidden regrets and unconfessed sins, often blending them with a cacophony of falsehoods to disorient and unsettle their victims.

It is no surprise a monster escaped from here.” But now that I could see better, I realized I had almost walked straight into a glass wall. On the other side, shadows echoed into eternity. A large cavernous dip plunged into the black darkness below on the other side of the glass wall. Across the canyon, a giant turquoise lizard slept.

“I’m ready, Mama.” As they stepped onto the path, the cavern shifted again. Crystals rose from the floor, glowing with a pulse that seemed almost alive. The walls formed into arches that narrowed overhead, creating a tunnel lined with silver light. The whispers of the past faded, replaced by a humming that resonated with the Moon’s heartbeat. “This is it,” Aria whispered. “The heart of the sanctuary.” Kael’s grip on her hand tightened. “Stay close. Every step could be another trial.”
