She had not called anyone except Mira from the burner phone, and Mira knew better than to slip up. She exhaled slowly. Okay. Think. The text said get off the highway. She was already off it. The text said do not use her real name. She had not given anyone her real name tonight. She glanced at the charging cable still connected to her phone, then at the man behind the bar who had simply handed it to her without asking who she was. So. Small town. Broken truck. No motel in immediate sight. And a bar full of men who wore matching leather cuts with a patch that read Iron Vow MC, which she was not going to think about too hard right now.

~Nick~ The name’s Nick Gracen, but most call me Lightning. I’m the local prez of the Wild Ridge MC Club. It’s a title that carries weight, respect, and a hell of a lot of responsibility. I looked around the clubhouse, a place that had seen more action than most could handle. The air was thick with the scent of oil, leather, and a hint of whiskey—a comforting blend that felt like home. The brothers were scattered around, some tinkering with their bikes, others deep in conversation about our latest shipment.

The girl giggles. “He is such a beautiful dog. He is such a softy.” She says, and I smile as I fuss over Brutus. “Yeah, he is. He is a good boy. So what is your name?” I ask her and she smiles at me. “Melody, my daddy is Outlaw, my uncle is Wild Child, the president of the Princes Of Darkness MC. What’s your name?” She says, tilting her head to the side and I watch her.

“Tristan Fuller…he was part of a biker gang. And so are the men that came around that day.” I sit up, the chips falling. “What’s the name of the gang?” “Smitties MC.” My jaw drops. No fucking way.

I'm so glad college is done! Professors let us out early today too! Guess I'll head over to the apartment I share with my boyfriend. I closed my eyes and opened it, unsure whether the MC was ready to listen to any explanation we might have.

“Really? You can pronounce their names?” “Well, no. But I’ve done close approximations for them.” He handed his notebook over to me. There were rough sketches of the Masters with names next to each. Comfort, Unscathed, Dark Melody, Skull Face, Cheeser, Manly, Killdozer, Gamba and Bisquik. You had to hand it to Maurice, he put the time in. “Nice. I thought his Dad sounded more like Biscuit.” I handed the notebook back.
