I hope I don’t have to attend one of those again for a long time. Nico seems to think I will shift tonight at midnight for the first time. He says that no matter what time I was born new wolves shift at midnight on the day they were born. Nico is worried about the pain of the first shift but I told him not to worry about it. I’ve been through worse, but that seemed to make him sad all over again. I try not to bring up my past with him because he either gets angry or sad at what happened to me, so I stick to talking to Helen.

“I actually enjoyed it. It was really interesting. Did you know Shifter can shift into anything out every animal group for the first month or so until you find your other?” He smiled clearly, amused at my reaction to this new school. “Yes, I did know that.” “Really old, pure blood, trained shifters can change into anything they see in front of them.” I told him even though I knew he would know, I was still amazed by what I just learned. “Thentos, Nia!” My nickname catched on quickly. I looked around and pulled Thentos to a stop as we waited for Stuttgart. He was smiling brightly, his gorgeous eyes focused on us.

The stable seems to quiet around us, as if even the horses are listening. “I can shift,” I lie. Nate tilts his head, studying me. “Can you?” “Yes.” He steps closer, invading my space with the casual confidence of someone who’s never been denied anything. “Then do it,” he says, voice still playful. “Right now. Just a little. A claw. An eye change. Something.”

But she held herself up in a crawling position, her face scrunched in discomfort. “Fuck! This never gets any easier. I hate this.” Nalia thought. This was one of the reasons she saw herself as unfit to become Enzo’s Luna. No one really knew, but shifting was a bit hard for her. Naria, who has always been the one defending us from bullies like her, snapped. “You know you guys are blocking our way,” Bethany said, pointing her hand toward the notice board. We gave her way, and then she and Shelly signed. Then she started laughing. “Wow, you really think—you, Nyra—could be a warrior? You can’t even shift, and you think you can be accepted as a warrior?” Bethany said as she continued laughing. “Stop it, Bethany. That’s enough. Guys, let’s go back to class,” Naria said.

"Kill her now!" The warriors drew their weapons, their blades sparkling in the harsh light. They started closing in, forming a tight circle around me. I looked around desperately, searching for an escape route, but there was none. The window was too far and the door was blocked. I was completely surrounded. "Selene," Nyra said urgently. "We have to shift. It's the only way." "I'm pregnant," I reminded her. "Shifting could hurt the baby." "Staying human will definitely get us killed," she shot back. "And then the baby dies anyway.
