I asked in a panic. “Yes. They told me they would rather kill themselves than have the council kill them and then you. The Perpetual Council did not listen to any of their protests, their concern was their laws. They don’t believe you can be a proper shadow hunter, but now look at you. You proved them wrong."

CHAPTER 9 Nyra’s POV Something they’re afraid of. His words stay in my head long after the Council leaves. Long after the hall empties. Long after the whispers begin. Because they don’t stop.
