Just as Maurice's slap was about to land, I blocked him with a swing of my arm. He looked at me in surprise, not expecting me to be able to dodge his attack. I'd rarely shown my martial arts prowess in my past life because I hadn't wanted to hurt his ego. But in this life, I could no longer stand having an idiot like him showing his face before me. I was about to cut ties with him when Mr. Smith came to me. He said he'd already prepared the carriage to take me home. I didn't want to keep them waiting, nor did I want to waste my breath arguing with Maurice. So, I walked past him and headed home.

The word cuts cleanly through the room. Sofia stops mid-sentence. Layla looks up. Luca stands in the doorway to the kitchen, jacket gone, sleeves rolled to reveal forearms dusted with dark hair. He looks younger without the suit jacket, but no less commanding. His expression is calm. His tone is not unkind. “Sorry?” Layla asks. His gaze drops briefly to her bare feet, then returns to her face. “There was glass earlier,” he says. “You didn’t see it. I did. I don’t like people getting hurt in my house.”

He could barely move; it was as though invisible chains bound him in place. Magnus struggled, trying to summon his power, but the smoke tightened its hold. Panic gnawed at him as he felt his energy sap away. The sinister force seemed to feed on his desperation, relishing in his helplessness. He knew this was no ordinary smoke—it was infused with dark magic, a trap laid specifically for him. His thoughts raced to Tribiano and to Lara, but no matter how hard he fought, the smoke was relentless. His body trembled under the strain, the primal urge to protect his pack warring with the paralysis that gripped him.

Karla's Pov Alpha Darwin. He was here already. “You're not saying anything? Well, you're smarter than I thought you were, what a pity for you that you could not escape very soon, isn't that it?” Darwin ‘tsked’, puffing out more smoke. My lips trembled as tell tale signs of tears and smoke began to make my eyes burn. The smoke was too much, and I couldn't breathe. Although my body had already begun to fight off the effects of the smoke, it was coming in faster than I could fight it. And just from one cigarette? That couldn't be possible. There had to be other places that the drug was burning from, it was coming from all directions.

He lifted his right hand and took a puff of his cigarette, once he had enough, he blew the fume off from his lips.

“You’re blaming the rain now?” He chuckled softly, that low sound that made my stomach flutter. “Maybe,” he said. “But I also have something that might help with the cold.” I raised an eyebrow, crossing my arms. “Oh really? What’s that?” He crouched by his bag and pulled out a small paper-wrapped thing, holding it up with a grin. I blinked. “Is that… smoke?” He nodded. “Yeahhh. Helps calm the nerves.” I stared at it for a second, biting my lip. “I’ve… never smoked before,” I admitted quietly, feeling stupid the moment I said it.

"The smoke... it's everywhere. Inside me. Burning. Choking." Justin looked around, confused. "What smoke? Nivia, we're far from the fire. There's no smoke here." But I could feel it. Inside my lungs, my throat, my blood. It was everywhere and nowhere, invisible to him but so real to me. "Don't you see it?" I asked desperately, more silver smoke escaping with my words. "The silver smoke? It's coming out of me!" He shook his head, but his hand never stopped rubbing my back. "I see it coming from you, but there's no smoke in the air. Just what you're... breathing out."

Bima jerked his hand back, slamming the gas valve shut with one hard twist. Thick black smoke billowed from the pot, carrying a burnt scent that instantly stung their throats. "Bima, get away from there!" Riska shouted, roughly pulling the man’s arm. Lia coughed violently behind them, trying to wave the smoke away with her hand. "What is that smell? This isn't just regular burning, it’s toxic." Kevin stared at the bubbling black liquid in the pot, his eyes wide and his breath coming in fast, ragged gasps. "How did my instant noodles turn into something as hideous as sludge?"

Diego and I stood like some damn frozen ducks, worthless in this fight. *Let the vamps and demons handle them, all others stand still, Shadows orders don’t try to be a hero,* Kendra shouted, over mind-link. Shit that was fine by me, I wasn’t trying to fight a zombie! I wanted to tell her to do something about this smoke, it was filling my lungs and I was certain everyone else was having the same issue. My chest grew tight and even holding my shirt over my face did nothing, it was too thick. “What the fuck is this smoke even,” Diego said, coughing.

Now I just had to figure out how I’d done it. My first thought was that the weed was responsible. Perhaps it contained some magical ingredient that allowed the smoker to do magic. But there was one flaw in this theory, which was Pitt. I had seen him do magic with the fish-calling, and he didn’t smoke. Then again, Nabbo was on his pipe pretty much 24/7, so there was always a cloud of smoke hanging over the platform. Second-hand smoke magic? It seemed a bit of a stretch.
