I cut in gently, lifting the book in my lap, “I’d like to get back to my story. I’m just at a very interesting page.”
I didn’t look up again. I turned a page I wasn’t reading, letting silence be my shield. A few seconds later, she left.
Only when I heard the door click shut did I lower the book and exhale. My fingers trembled slightly as I gripped the arm of the chair. I stared at the door, heart pounding.
