Natalie was already in bed preparing to go to sleep, but upon hearing her phone ring, she sat up again. She took her phone and glanced at it. It was an unknown number. Who would call her at this time of the night? But the ringing made her feel restless, so she answered it. "Hello?" she said. "I'm Jackson. Your mom's dying. Do you want to meet her one last time?" We exited the room in silence and went down the stairs where Nate's mother stood as though she had been expecting us. She scrunched up her face when she locked gazes with me but I simply averted my eyes. I was in no mood for another round of purposeless banter. "Nate, you're leaving?" She asked as though it wasn't already very obvious. "Yes, mom. Viv suddenly developed a migraine and I wanted her to rest." He attempted to hug her goodbye but she wasn't having it. She put out a hand to stop him and adopted a fighting stance. "Is she all you care about? Vivian this, Vivian that.

dad replies, leaving me shocked. "Dad, Nat didn't know her mom was sick, or she would have said something," I say with a high-pitched voice earning me a stern glance that says be quiet. "I already know that, Ryan. Apparently, Nat's mom did not share her condition with her only daughter," dad says, placing his elbows on the table deep in thought. I glance over at the girls to see how they are doing, and the pain in my chest only grows. Lacy is crying but rubbing Stacy's back quietly because she is crying too.
