New Jack Reacher Novels & Stories

I just finished it last week, and the short version is maybe not as your very first one. I'm a huge Reacher guy, but 'The Sentinel' felt a bit...off. The co-writer thing is obvious, the tech stuff is clunky, and Reacher solving a server farm conspiracy doesn't have the same primal, drifter-punches-evil-guy charm. It reads like a competent thriller with Reacher's name slapped on it.

If you're brand new, I'd say go back to the early ones like 'Tripwire' or 'The Killing Floor'. That's the classic formula, perfectly tuned. The new books feel like they're trying to make him fit into modern plots that don't really suit him. The pacing is fine, and there are a couple of decent action beats, but the soul isn't quite there. I'll keep reading them out of loyalty, but I wouldn't recommend starting here.

Reacher is still Reacher, doing his wandering justice thing, with the same continuity. The prose style has shifted a bit—some readers find it more streamlined, others miss the older lyrical density—but the character and his world are unchanged.

It feels less like a new series and more like a new authorial voice taking the wheel of the same long-running vehicle. If you stopped at, say, 'Past Tense', you can pick up 'The Sentinel' next and it's just book 25.
