As he spoke, Julian handed his books to the cashier. I held onto the books I'd bought and waited with Willow by my side. Julie entered the bathroom in a hurry. She didn’t want to miss anything. Julie wanted Hugh Dawson, the artist, to see her as acceptable. Who’d been sweet enough to do her book covers for nothing but only for her mention that he’d created them for her? She mentioned every time he made the covers for her. With three books published, his name appeared on each cover as the cover’s creator, beneath her name as the author. Julia closed the thick book and, with a disappointed face, carried it back to the shelf. “I spent so much time on this stupid little book, but there is nothing useful in it,” she thought to herself. Julia walks past Dook, who is sitting in a chair. He stares off into nowhere as if in a trance, clutching a brand new book.

“I’m not.” Cassiel’s grip tightened. “You’re still mine. Whole or broken.” Silence fell again. Julian didn’t pull his hand away. But he didn’t squeeze back either. Cassiel didn’t expect him to. Not yet. Cassiel was still seated beside him, quiet, elbows on his knees, hands clasped together. Julian cleared his throat. “There’s a book on that shelf.” Cassiel turned. “Which one?” “The red one. Third from the left. Hardcover.”

Some looked impressed. Others burned with jealousy. Julia stood by the staircase, arms crossed, her eyes narrowing like daggers as the pair descended. Her teeth clenched behind a fake smile. So calm and gentle that one would think he was nobody dangerous and had nothing to hide. Rising from her seat, Julie approached that shelve and gave a hard stare at the book. And the longer she stared at it, she did not know why but it seem to be becoming more and more mysterious, nearly enticing, in her eyes. It was really strange as it was just a book and there was no way it would be about him… right? Was this because she was just thinking too much? That must be the case, she thought, sighing. Still, she reached out to retrieve the book when all of a sudden, she heard the soft sound of the doors closing and muted falls of footsteps coming towards her.

It was nice to see. “What are you reading?” she asked. Julia filled her in on the newest novel she had found stashed away in an old cabinet in the back of the house. It was an extremely exciting romance story that Julia said she could hardly put down. Once Cordia was up to speed on what had happened so far, Julia began to read the rest of the story to her. After an hour or so of reading about pirates, treasures, and how Sir Camion would love Miss Sicilia to the end of time, Julia paused. “My throat is dry,” she said. She coughed a little, which alarmed Cordia.

She might as well start with those. She grabbed a cloth and carefully wiped each book clean before placing them into a cardboard box. As she carried the box downstairs, she happened to run into Julian, who had just rushed back. He glanced at her and asked casually, “Where are you taking those books?” Autumn looked down at the books in her arms and replied offhandedly, “I was cleaning the room and saw these lying around gathering dust. Figured they’re useless now, so I’m tossing them.” Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
