“Well, that’s debatable.” The conversation is light and easy during lunch, with Matthew and Liam entertaining us with funny anecdotes and jokes. “Jacob tells me you’re from Minnesota. Mind if I ask why you decided to come to New York?” asks Matthew. “I’m embarrassed to admit it, but like everyone else in search of a dream, mine was to make it big in the magazine industry,” I say, feeling myself blush. “What stopped you?” he continues. “Oooh, the list is so long, where do I start?” I laugh.

She laughed so loudly the walls seemed to shake with it. And I sat there at the table, staring at my untouched notebook, wondering why the sight of Noah so easily woven back into our lives made me both comforted…and uneasy. Because Noah was safe. Noah was familiar. But Noah had also been the one to push me toward New York in the first place. I wondered what would have happened if I had never gone to New York in the first place. Maybe my mom would be back here. Maybe I would have written my book because it was only rebellion that fueled my writing and seeing everywhere is oddly and terrifyingly calm, the drive to write slowly died.
