Jimmy said to Susan. She laughed. “She’s going to be a famous writer. She’d better have some opinions on literature.” “Fine,” Kimia glared at me. “Jane Austin. She had some great leads.” I ticked off the male leads on my fingers. “Darcy was an asshole to Elizabeth, Bingly let himself be talked away from Jane, Wickham is just a bastard, Wentworth treated Anne like shit because she refused him as a teenager, Edmund Bertram was obsessed with the pretty new girl and forgot about Fanny, Ferras fell in love with Elanore when he was engaged to someone else, Brandon was still hung up on his dead ex, and let’s face it. Nobody cares about Northanger Abbey.”

Marie said. "All literary characters." Pearl said after hearing about them. "Their names. Oliver, that's Dickens. Holden, that's Salinger. Atticus, is Harper Lee and Maisie, that's Henry James and Kipling." "Yes!" Marie smiled. "Not many catch that, I am and always have been an avid reader and lover of literature." "Same here." Pearl said. She was failing in love with his parents too. And no mention of money and no hint of billions. Ian was a liar.

He said with a wink. I wanted to say that I was yet to see any real power being given to me yet but instead I smiled politely. I didn't want to awaken the beast inside him. "Thank you" I said awkwardly. "It's no problem," He replied smiling. "So which of Dickens' books is your favorite?" He asked me. "Great Expectations" "Alright, why is that?" "It's much too sad. The way Dickens portrays the characters were well written out and Pip is one character I sympathize with the most. He really went through a lot."

She decided on Great Expectations, gladly picking up the book and bouncing back to her bed, to enjoy another pleasurable surmount of reading a book. "So, throughout life, our worst weaknesses and meannesses are usually committed for the sake of the people whom we most despise." ― Charles Dickens Sighing, she went downstairs to read in the living room. The windows were open and the bright rays of the sun gently crowned a portion of the room. Sapphire plunged herself in the thick, rust-colored couch and began to immerse herself in the world of Pip, with all the marshlands and funny accent people spoke there. In the middle of reading, she heard engines of an unfamiliar vehicle. She stood up and

“Imagine owning a first edition of anything by Charles Dickens, let alone ‘A Christmas Carol.’” I was as embarrassed by her prattle as I was annoyed by Dane’s abruptness and discourtesy. Father and I exchanged glances; by the look in his eyes I knew he was thinking, She never shuts up, does she? At least she’s being civil to the man, so cut her some slack, please. Dane sighed and seemed to cast about for something to say. “Are you fond of Dickens?” She turned beet-red, like a child caught with hands in the cookie jar. I knew she was afraid he’d question her about Oliver Twist or Great Expectations or the like—which of course she’d never read.

His eyes widened in admiration as he carefully pulled out the novel I’d been reading—Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations. Before I could respond, Eleanor's voice from my phone hit my ear–I realized she had already picked up the call.

“Dickens said I deserved this for being the only woman who truly appreciates him.” My mother’s eyes lit up as though Clara had just won the lottery. “Oh, Clara, that’s beautiful! See, Isabella? That’s what happens when you don’t throw good men away.” I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing myself to stay silent. “Meanwhile,” Clara continued, looking me up and down, “Isabella’s running around in greasy uniforms, serving strangers. Honestly, sis, maybe you should ask Dickens for your job back. I’m sure he’d let you polish his shoes.”

The bell rang. Jane was stuffing A Tale of Two Cities into her backpack when she heard Lucy's voice beside her. "You're reading Dickens?" Jane nodded warily. "Oh, I love Dickens. Have you read David Copperfield? Or Oliver Twist? Olive Twist is my favorite. I've read it twice. I cried both times. I can't believe someone else in our class is reading Dickens." To her dismay, Jane found herself walking down the hall to English with Lucy by her side, still talking, talking, talking.
