One of the big things I wanted to highlight all throughout the novel was this idea of Good vs Evil. In my opinion, this is a narrative tool that waters down human experiences and does us all a disservice. What I mean is that boiling things down to just Good or just Evil isn’t an objectively good way to look at reality. Or at stories in general. Our lives are far more complex and nuanced than just those two aspects, and to paint people or characters as either/or is both lazy and misleading.

I asked. “My belief, you asked? First of all, I believe that lessons of life are indeed mostly gained through pain, that we are able to stand firm in every situation because we stiffen ourselves up from it. With misery, undesirably, we all are able to recognize every bit of happiness as its polarity. Sadness exists.” He paused, making me glance at him. Yeah, right? He just lost his attentiveness. “My belief does saunter upon eradicating evil; a balance between good and evil, they said, is vital, but I thought otherwise. Good can exist without evil, and vice versa.” He heaved a sigh,

“There should be a balance. In the world we live in, we have Good and we have Evil. The two coexist together. And we have accepted it. Evil exists so that we appreciate the Good. Good exists to subdue and neutralize the effects of the Evil. We all need the Good and the Evil to live in peace.” The air starts to calm as I speak. I can feel their curiosity peak. They are curious to know what I have to say. “When there is more Good than Evil, there would be a problem, even if you do not see it that way. Evil, as we perceive it, is merely the absence of good, much like darkness is the absence of light. Within me, there exists no inherent goodness, light, or kindness, only a drive for self-preservation and a thirst for power to ensure that no one ever stands in my path again.
