Sebastian POV The fire crackles softly in the center of the small campsite we chose for the night. It seemed to come quickly. Honestly, I thought I’d have gotten to Amara by now. But it would seem that isn’t the case. It’s night 2 in the dark forest. The fire's orange light pushed back the darkness just enough to make the clearing feel safe. Not warm exactly, but safe enough to breathe again. After the cavern.. I’ll take it. That was goddess awful. I swear it to the moons.

She just wanted a day of not paying attention. Even though her head was on the desk and her eyes were covered by her pack. Ava knew where everyone was in the room. Some were standing by the door. Some were in their seats or on their way. That was why she was not surprised when someone sat down behind her. “Didn’t get any sleep, Ava?” “No, Dustin. I didn’t.” Not when she saw monsters lurking in the shadows of the forest that she lived in. Hollywood did not give the nighttime creatures justice. The ones on the silver screen look like puppies with warpaint on their bodies. The thought of being alone made Ava chuckled darkly.

“Well … OK.” It feels odd, handing over Noah to Lorcan. But the truth is, I do have a dodgy shoulder and it is a bit of a relief. We reach our suite and Lorcan carries Noah straight to his bed. He’s so sound asleep, he doesn’t stir. I remove his shoes but nothing else. He can clean his teeth and put his pajamas on tomorrow night, if he wants to. I turn off Noah’s light and head to the door, and for a moment Lorcan and I stand there together, for all the world like two parents.

I'd been hearing distant sounds and strange noises echo through the damned woods. A shiver ghosted through me. Navae Woods was considered the scariest forest in the continent so far. What made it terrifying was that it was crawling with monsters from different species. The instructions had specially warned me to avoid them. Despite the bright moon hovering up in the sky, I could barely see anything in the darkness. It could be dangerous to continue to wander in the darkness, and I couldn't keep being out in the open. Shae buzzed from my amethyst necklace, reminding me I wasn't alone before I kept moving from one tree to another.

ENID’S POV The woods were quiet in that way that only happened before something terrible. No birdsong, no rustle. Just stillness. I stood near the fire pit, arms crossed, watching the last embers from the scouting report burn down. The map was already burned into my mind anyway. Lark stepped up behind me. He didn’t announce herself—he never did—but I didn’t flinch. I knew that footfall. “It’s a bad night for secrets,” Lark said, voice barely above a whisper.

Now in most woods, most of the scariest things don’t come out at night, all the nocturnal animals are relatively harmless, but in this part of the woods i am i habe no fucking idea. My face drops. Oh shit, bears. Are there bears in these woods? My eyes widen. Do they eat people? What about wolves, I’m so fucked. I didn't think this through. Shit, I need a fire. How do you light a fire without a match stick? I shake my head at my stupidity. i should have watched some woods shows,I hate those fucking shows and now I know why. This is totally fucked up. I hate surviving. At least if I had watched National Geographic i might know what what to do,what the hell I'm i going to do now?

Lucas replies. The air is electric, raising all the hairs on the back of my neck. “We’ve got to close that rift before it gets any bigger.” I look down the driveway, debating if we should take the road back to my house. With this estate being so far back from the road, it’s faster to go through the woods, emerging into my backyard. Being on the street offers more visibility as well but will take twice as long. Fuck. I start towards the woods. “The wendigo is back,” Lucas says, tipping his head up and smelling the air. “He’s not far, but we have some time.

She had already sprinted past the turnoff for her apartment building; leading these unknown killers to her safe house would be suicide. She needed to lose them in the dark, because if she failed to break their line of sight, she would likely end up as a corpse on an autopsy table by morning. The path ahead was pitch black, unlit by any city infrastructure, but her enhanced night vision handled the darkness without issue. Fortunately, she knew these back alleys like the back of her hand. Reaching the absolute end of the concrete maze, the narrow path finally opened up into the wide, brightly lit expanse of the multi-lane highway.

The fiery nightmares were gone, replaced by a peace and freedom in my soul like I have never known. The money from the sale of the old house? I kept my promise and sent it to Silvia's account. That was when my phone buzzed with a news update. It was Silvia's face on the screen, at Derrick's wedding. I watched as she marched up with a can of gasoline. In front of everyone, she doused Derrick with it and tossed a lighter, igniting a firestorm. Derrick's screams pierced the air, and pandemonium broke out. The flames cast a wild glow on Silvia's face as she laughed, a chilling, unhinged cackle.
