I was more than hesitant to go into the forest, looking back at what happened last time. I squinted, trying to see better when a gust of wind sliced through the trees and into my very core. It was only then that I realized I was out in the middle of the night, freezing in the pajamas Nathan picked for me. This was a bad idea. I concluded, not seeing any movement. My shoulders slumped as I turned around and started back towards the room. Or at least what I hoped was our room. “Before you go any further, I have a proposition to make,” someone said from around me. I spun around frantically, trying to see who was speaking to me, but couldn't see anyone.

*bang *bang *bang Another horrifying nightmare woke her up making her sit on the bed. Another room greeted her with a happy morning, not the same as before. Yesterday's accident knocked her off to unconsciousness, wasting the chance for her to think. Where was she right now? What happened from her last assassination? Her memory of being engulfed by a green light was exhibited on her mind. The fact that she even stumbled upon a rather odd occurrence, magic; he spawned fire on the thin air and the Sirius---star keeper.

Out past the tree line, something far beyond the firelight had seized the other end of my broken mate bond and it had just felt me pull back. My head snapped up. Past the blazing bonfire, past the last flickering torch, the dense black stand of pines stretched endlessly into the night. The pristine snow between the thick trunks glowed with the eerie, pale blue light winter holds after dark. There was no visible shape. No glowing eyes. No breath in the freezing air. Yet deep within the black woods, something massive turned and locked its gaze onto me.

My body trembled in fear, and my shoulder started to shake as I sobbed uncontrollably. I was startled when two of the trees on both sides of the path shone. I raised my head to see the trees adorned with Christmas lights. I was still sniffling when I stood up, placing Albert's bracelet in my pocket, I made another step. Another pair of trees shone as the bulb light turned on. They looked like the fireflies in the woods. I narrowed my eyes, but the lighted bulbs didn't help my eyes adjust in the dark. As I made another step, pair of trees would twinkle beautifully.

Eve and Layla finally came out and I couldn't help but smile. "You two are adorable." Hart smiled. Not only were their pjs cute, they had both done their hair in two braids. I kissed Layla as Leo did the same to Eve and then our fathers made us all pose in front of the tree and they took pictures. Layla insisted on Dad and Bear joining us as they took some timer shots. After that, we relaxed in front of the tree as Leo built and lit a fire in the fireplace. Eve and Layla made us tea and coffee and we snuggled together and watched the Nightmare Before Christmas.

If I were truly a witch, then perhaps—just maybe-this journey would lead me to discover more than I ever imagined possible. As night fell on the third day of our trip, the snowy forest around us grew darker and more threatening. My mom drove, her knuckles white as she gripped the steering wheel, while the rhythmic sound of Dad's snoring in the backseat played a surreal soundtrack to the eerie landscape. The trees towered overhead like shadows from a forgotten fairy tale, their branches clawing at the sky, and I braced myself against the cold, hard plastic of the passenger seat.

I'd been hearing distant sounds and strange noises echo through the damned woods. A shiver ghosted through me. Navae Woods was considered the scariest forest in the continent so far. What made it terrifying was that it was crawling with monsters from different species. The instructions had specially warned me to avoid them. Despite the bright moon hovering up in the sky, I could barely see anything in the darkness. It could be dangerous to continue to wander in the darkness, and I couldn't keep being out in the open. Shae buzzed from my amethyst necklace, reminding me I wasn't alone before I kept moving from one tree to another.

I make a quick trip deeper into the woods and work out the kinks in my legs. When I come back, I steal a sip of Nia’s whiskey to warm my chest. She stirs in silence. I set the glass on the frosted ground and shove my hands up my jacket sleeves to warm my fingers. It’s a new moon, and the smattering of late November stars fade as we get closer to sunrise. Beyond the fire, black walnut trees loom high overhead, punctuating the stillness of the night with a jarring thump each time the wind knocks an overripe nut free from its moorings.

The hiss of escaping air and the zombie’s moans blended together, and the Santa dented, tilted, and deflated, his face morphing from a Christmas grin into a weird, distorted grimace. The zombie turned to face me, its half-rotted burial gown fluttering and its disintegrating jaws wide open, showing me a set of yellow teeth and a blackened lump of tongue. I swung the machete before it could get close enough to snap at me, sending its head tumbling off…right onto the deflating body of Santa Claus. Oh, fuck. If the zombies didn’t kill me, Nate would. “More coming out of the woods!” Matt’s voice, loud enough to echo all the way down the hill to anyone still at the cottages.
