ROSALINE I slowly opened my eyes with a yawn to see myself entangled with Alexei. He was still asleep and had his arms wrapped around me while I was on top of him. I liked this. I took my time to admire his features. His lashes, his nose, his cheeks, lips and everything. I would never get tired of doing so. I brought my fingers up to his face and began to trace imagine circles on his cheeks. His skin was smooth as that of a baby and yet, he had no skincare routine. God really has favorites then. With a grin, I continued to caress his face with my fingers.

“I’m no genius, but I’m pretty sure even I know that code daddy dearest was talking in was referring to us.” Ghost scoffed, then snorted, then shook his head incredulously. “Who’s who then?” “Isn’t it obvious?” Knight clicked his teeth. “You’re the orchids. He said they’re commonly used in funerals. Funerals happen in graveyards, which is commonly where ghosts are found.” He shot a finger gun at Ghost. “Fire lily is Damon, clearly. I’m the moonflowers.” Shadows snaked across the floor, rolling over the wood like a dark fog. He gestured down at the sea of darkness. “Duh. And Caius is the rose, because he’s a prickly ass bastard.”

They stared at each other silently for a while, neither having a word to say. After a moment, Dylan cleared his throat, his hands running through his thick, strands of hair.

Rylan thought I was losing my mind. "You called me at midnight to discuss flower species‚" he said during our last call. "Midnight‚ Darius." "Jasmine or wisteria. Which one climbs better in partial shade?" "I'm your Beta‚ not a botanist." "Then find me a botanist." "It's midnight." "Rylan." He sighed. "Jasmine. It's hardier and it smells better. “I told him he lost me. I told him I could walk away. But here I am, still breathing his name in my chest.” The horse slowed as we reached the deeper thicket. Trees leaned like old giants, their branches clutching at my cloak. I dismounted, clutching Roses tight, my boots sinking into wet soil. The stream’s scent still clung to me, but it wouldn’t last. I had to wash Nightbane off me completely, or the wolves would find me. I kissed the crown of Roses’ head, forcing myself to keep moving. “Do you hear that, little fox?” I called her that sometimes now, though I didn’t know why. “Crickets. Owls. All of them are watching. Even the shadows know we’re running.”

Then the night fell. ⸻ The villa glowed under soft candlelight. They returned after dinner, the air cooler now, the sound of crickets singing in the hills. The lake shimmered like silk outside the wide-open window. In their bedroom, the sheets had been turned down. White roses sat at the bedside. Drystan stood by the door, watching her move. Rosealba turned, her silk robe sliding slightly from her shoulder. “Don’t look at me like that,” she whispered feeling his gaze bore deeply into her.

He looked at me in amazement, and I tried not to shy away. “Do you like my creation?” I asked him lowly. “Olivia,” he said reverently, “you look ethereal.” I felt my cheeks warm, but I embraced the satisfaction. I’d found these flowers in a corner of the manor gardens, and since they only bloomed under the full moon they were said to be blessed to the Moon Goddess. It had been insanely difficult weaving them together like this, but for the look on Elroy’s face, it was absolutely worth it.

They want to dismantle the hierarchy of the entire wolf kind. "Who’s your contact?" I demand, stepping back. "How are you moving across borders unseen? Who’s feeding you intel?"
