One of them brought up a rock and cracked it against Xavier’s head. Xavier went limp. My heart stopped for a split second as fear pierced through my chest. Taking a breath, I concentrated on Xavier. I could still sense him, and his heartbeat was strong. He was alive, for now. I stepped forward, my eyes narrowing on the wolf who held the knife to my mother’s neck. Lyra hissed, one hand flying out to smack me in the chest. She took a step. “Hunter, step the fuck down.” The wolf twitched, his gaze flicking between Travis and I, confused and not sure what to do.

She asked, eyes studying mine. My gaze snapped back to hers. "I feel he was certainly close," I confessed. "Criston the Cruel," Liston began, as our eyes snapped to him. I ducked but without taking a big angry welt. I could feel the blood trickling down my neck, staining my blouse.

He fired back. “What is wrong with all of you!” I folded my arms angrily. “Xavier.” Connor walked over and snatched Xavier's tea. “Tell us what's going on?” All eyes landed on Xavier ,the scent of fear immediately filled the air. Flame Knight 2 (to the other): "He's merged with it! The Crown Wolf!" Xavier (wiping blood from his mouth): "I didn't merge with it. We remembered each other." The second knight hurls a flame spear — it cracks the air in a white-hot blur. Xavier dodges, barely. The heat slices across his arm. He grunts, falls to one knee. Crown Wolf (telepathically, voice inside Xavier's head): "Let go. Use all of me." Xavier (to himself):

Donovan smirks, leaning against the railing as he says, “Me! You know, you really should’ve killed me when you had the chance to, Xavier. I can promise you one thing, you will not make it out alive tonight.” Donovan’s voice dropped on the last sentence and for the first time in my life, my father looks scared. Donovan shifts into his wolf and jumps from the second floor down to Xavier. I’m caught off guard by how similar Donovan’s wolf looks to mine. It’s a giant black wolf and the main difference is that his has silver streaks throughout it. As Donovan is mid-air, I hear the cracking of bones as Xavier shifts into his wolf as well. I follow suit, my wolf, Hunter, is itching to get out.
