With a scream of despair, I jolted awake, my body drenched in a cold sweat. As I laid in my bed, the remnants of the terrible dream haunted me. The vision of my parents consumed in a blazing inferno tormented me, their shouts for aid reverberating in my ears. Tears flowed down my cheeks as I fought to remove the horrible sight from my thoughts. Nightmares like these had become all too familiar to me since their awful deaths.

After three back-to-back nights of working until 3:00 am, I dropped dead. Honestly, I thought it was a relief and that my 23 years of corporate misery had finally come to a blissful end. But when I opened my eyes, I found myself transmigrated into a horror game. Right now, I was sitting in a classroom. A hanging ghost dangled from the blackboard, and its long tongue was dragging across the floor. A jumper ghost was doing a handstand on the desk with its eyeballs stretched six feet out of their sockets.

I quickly drift off to sleep. Not surprisingly, my sleep is filled with nightmares, each one more terrifying than the last. The visions are incredibly vivid: snarling werebears surround me in an ever-tightening circle; a giant roc ensnares me in its talons and carries me to its mountaintop nest; fearsomely ugly ogres tie me to a spit and begin roasting me over a blazing fire. The dreams all have the same thing in common—I’m about to meet some horrifying doom. I sure hope that my as yet unrevealed Power doesn’t turn out to be precognition!

Grey that is the color of dreams, the color of nightmares. My nightmares mantled me like a thorny cloak, like an adamant bloodstain- they were constant. I did leave those monsters 22 years ago, but, the scars they gave me- it never left my mind. I had demons, so many of them, haunting me, nagging me. My traumas were constant, reveling in my misery. My eyes wandered to a void as I felt this weird hollowness in my chest, a feeling that had been with me since forever.

No one except the man. The lights flickered. Static buzzed in the bulbs. Electricity crackled. The carriage was plunged into darkness, just a split second of impenetrable black that filled my mouth, my nose, my ears, like thick, dank water, choking me, drowning me. When the lights exploded back into life, I saw it. A sheen of silvery skin on the man's cheek, harsh white reflecting off scarred flesh. It was a brief flicker of a bad dream. A touch of a nightmare; there and then gone again so quickly that I had to blink away the haze, but I knew I'd seen it, I'd seen him .

DAVID'S POV CONT. "The truth is that you haven't lost your memory. This is just you living one life not a doubled life don't listen to whatever people say. Nightmares made manifest. Faces twisted by guilt. Memories stained by wounds. Traumas long buried clawing their way into the shared dream. Sophia stepped forward. “No — not like this.” The nightmares surged, not malicious, but desperate — the unprocessed pain of billions seeking release all at once.

NIGHTMARES. A very bad or frightening dream. Anna was starting to lose count of the number of nightmares she’s been having since Josh’s death but whenever she woke up with one, clearing her head with a jog had been working well on her. She lets out a sigh as she turns sideways to stare at the mini alarm clock she had next to her bed. I lie on the bed inhaling deeply and the smell is much stronger here. My heart races with the thought of someone breaking into my home and the dread in me intensifies seeing a black note on the side of the table. Ice grips me as I stare at the cursive words written in red. Caged in a nightmare. Fear the darkness, Unknown to the eyes. The flower spreads poison, just as ocean drowned the love.
