Nina listened quietly to their chat from the side, suddenly regretting that she only came back now, she seemed to have missed out on so much, so much. Tara pinched a piece of ribs into her bowl, red-eyed, and said nothing. Nina sighed and ate the ribs clean, "Mom, don't worry, I won't go away again, I will learn business well from my brother, I've seen through creatures like men, I'm going to be self-reliant in the future, I'm going to raise as many Puppy faces as I want." Tara was just about to chastise her, after all, such an idea was just too dangerous, what on earth had this child learned outside.

I don’t know it’s all so confusing I need to do an all-nighter googling all of this. Nina goes back to doing whatever she’s doing, “Oh Emily, look at this, I got a better image, these little things here, these are the start of arms and there are the legs and the head and abdomen,” she points everything out with so much excitement, she really is so sweet and I can tell she loves her job.

Richard adopted Nina when she was young. "If I don't read, won't you sleep?" "Yes, I want to wait for you." Nina is obedient and understanding. "OKAY." Richard holds the storybook that Nina has prepared. He kissed her forehead. "Today I'm going to tell you about The Little Mermaid." Richard's voice resounded in the small room, and Nina fell asleep listening to the story. "Dad." "I'm here." "I want to go to the amusement park with mom and dad." Nina is just a little girl who always wants to go out and be with her family.

The nursery was finally done. Soft gray walls with Nina's hand-painted woodland creatures. White crib with matching changing table. Rocking chair in the corner with a footstool. Shelves full of books they hadn't read yet. Drawers full of tiny clothes that seemed impossibly small. Lia stood in the doorway, one hand on her five-month belly, taking it all in. "What do you think?" Nina asked, stepping back to admire her mural work. A family of deer under a tree. Rabbits in the grass. An owl watching from a branch.

Nina lay on the grass looking at the clouds and chattering away, explaining whatever she saw in them. “Hey.” I sat down next to them. I kissed sylvia gently, tasting the saltiness of her tears on her lips. “Hunter! I see lots of shapes in the clouds. Look, look! There is an angel!” Nina cried out. “Yes, princess. I see the angel.” I said, but I looked at Sylvia. I wiped a stray lock of chestnut hair behind her ear. “Mama, Nina’s hungry. Grrr! I am a hungry wolf, big scary wolf.” Nina pounced on us, growling and showing her tiny teeth.

"Shortcuts." "Yeah, you know, the cheat codes," I joked, shifting closer. I let my eyes linger on his face, lowering my voice a bit. "Come on. You’re the genius here and I’m just a guy trying to keep his head above water. Help a guy out, and I promise I’ll make it worth your while. I can get you premium tickets to the winter finals or anything else that's within my power that you'd like." Nathan looked down at the worksheet, then looked back up at me. For a second, I actually thought my charm had worked.

It turned out that Sophia heard her, the girl had already left the clown fish, and I don't know when Sophia had been sitting next to her, looking at her with an innocent look. "Sophia, did you hear that?" Elina scratched her head that wasn't itchy. Not sure what to make of it. Sophia gave a small nod with a curious look at the word "pedophile" that Elina said. Sophia did have a high level of curiosity. "Honey, it's time for bed. Isn't tomorrow your first day as Mr. Oliver's personal maid? You can't oversleep." Emily tried to change the subject. "Yes, mom. I almost forgot. Alright Elina, good night. I'm going to bed first."

Angel POV. This morning's announcements were crazy, they are crazy, I don't believe there are vampires, but I'm not going out to check, I'm not going to go around asking, who would I talk to? Years later the nuclear war was still causing trouble all over, it got some people to go insane, they thought they were vampires, what's coming next? Werewolves and fairies? If we get to choose, I'm going to be a fairy for sure, I'll be Tinkerbell really, I'd fly around and sing forever young.

It's all a fantasy. Fable has been my escape. An unhealthy one. A safe pretend world where I could bury myself. Just like how Zee cried after she finished the final Harry Potter book, or how Jamie bases so much of her worth on the fictional version of herself that lives across a thousand Instagram pics, in the comments and likes of a thousand strangers. Just carefully constructed lies to comfort and lull. Dreams.

"Stop being dumb! Nina wants you at the party. Do as she says!" Just as I stumbled in, Murphy and Nina's friends swarmed over. They hollered, "Zoreen, come play some games with us!" Nina narrowed her eyes like a sly little fox. She said to Sebastian, "I had some cake and now my throat feels a little tight. Darling, could you go upstairs and get me some medication?" Naturally, Sebastian agreed immediately. Nina's warm expression instantly disappeared when Sebastian left. Smirking mockingly, she quipped, "I heard you sacrificed your wolf. Are you able to go about life normally now? Are you even a real wolf?"
