I cleared my throat and looked away. 'I loved the Little mermaid too. It was sad and real, unlike most fairy tales.' What? He likes the little mermaid because it was sad? I hated the story. I read it when I was 8 and I felt really sad for the little mermaid who gave everything up for the prince and she still couldn't have him in the end. I opened my mouth to ask him if he liked it because it was sad but he beat me to it. 'What was your favorites?'

Osprey roost on their chests, furrowed brow contorted with whirlpools, seaweed bangs and shipwreck eyes, oh Atlanta Naiads, oh sweet banks of ruin, my end comes swiftly as the gale endures, envelops, and in the grips of the sirens, I hear a melody like melancholy, like honey crisps, so I let go, dive down, build sand castles to be lovingly eaten away at by foam. The mermaid gives up the ghost and becomes a creature of air, and under her sister’s gaze, I let go of all water weighing me down, become but bubbles, and swim. Tithe Tell me, oh fairy queen, do I fit the narrative? Am I pretty enough? Am I witty enough? Is my skin the dun of a cow?

It seemed I would be the only one paying my respects at this mid-autumn festival. I had not even reached the door when a harsh crash echoed through the air. My chest tightened. I ran inside and saw several workers swinging sledgehammers at the walls. “Stop!” I shouted and stormed in. The house was a wreck. Furniture was smashed to splinters. Lance stood amidst the ruins, seizing my mother's ancestral tablet and smashing it to the ground. Crack! The tablet shattered into pieces. He was not satisfied. He stomped on my mother’s black-and-white portrait, grinding it into the floor.

“Mommy, you and Sarah can go to bed first. I’ll be bathing now!” “Alright.” Sally ruffled her obedient son’s hair. “Sleep early. Don’t mess around in the bathroom.” “Got it!” The little guy smiled as he shut the door to the bathroom. Sally yawned and walked into Sarah’s bedroom. She picked up a book of fairytales and lay on the bed before asking, “Where did we stop yesterday?” “We stopped when the little mermaid turned into a human and went looking for her prince.” Dressed like a pink bunny, the little girl leaned against the bed and blinked innocently as she gazed at Sally.

Tears filled her eyes as she tried to take them in. Aidan rested his hands helplessly on the pillar in front of him. "This isn't just about being the fairy mother, if...if" Aidan stammered. "If the wolves were to find out we'd be damned," Peri cut in. Both Peri and her advisor Aidan were worried and they assured themselves to just let it be a secret as they appoint her youngest daughter, Saria, as the Fairy mother. "Mother!" A young fairy was approaching. Saria was a fine young fairy with eyes like sunlight and hair blonde. She was slim-built and considerably tall for someone her age.

“Can you like, show me? What you mean, when you think of a mermaid?” I glance at Anton and then put my coffee on the table and move closer to Laila, conjuring a children’s story book in my hands as I do. It’s one of my favorites from when I was a little girl – a story about a mermaid who falls in love with a Prince who lives on land. She gives up her ocean life to go and live at his side.

I cannot say nearly enough positive things about this book. It’s both a stand alone incredible story, as well as an amazing addition to the universe of “alphas surrogate”. I hope the author continues this family’s stories through other characters lives as well. Her writing is my favorite on this app

The winter fairy asked. “Yes of course.” Elena said. She takes a drink of water as she did before. The water in the glass begins to swirl revealing a mermaid. The winter fairy spirit takes a close look and a version of memories rushes to her head. “This can't be? The mermaid you see isn't just one but many. They live in the kingdom of the Atlantic.” The winter fairy spirit said. “How does that connect to me?” Elena asked. “They appear to be in danger of their own kind.” The winter fairy spirit said.

“Not your storybook princesses. Not fish-tailed angels. But creatures of tide and hunger. Their songs aren’t lullabies, they are traps. They drag ships under, for fun. For vengeance. For a different kind of delicacy.” I saw black eyes in green water, mouths filled with rows of sharp teeth. I was gripping the stool so hard my knuckles ached. “Fair folk,” she said, her voice turning sharp. “Don’t ever call them fairies. That word is a lie. They are not cute. They are not kind. They are old as time, twisted by beauty and cruelty. They trade in riddles and pain. Step into their realm, and time will forget you. You will come back hollow, if you come back at all.”

- He finally added. The brunette girl with curly hair gave me a radiant look, She seems so sweet and lovely, but there was something sinister behind her brown hazel eyes. It reminded me of a smile with a certain darkness on her beautiful face, a smile I had perceived before, although I couldn't recall with whom. "In Greek and Scandinavian mythology, the mermaid is a demigoddess who lives in the oceans and with her songs, she can seduce men" - he responded. In that moment, his attention was completely focused on me.

The original story of 'The Little Mermaid' by Hans Christian Andersen is actually quite haunting compared to the whimsical Disney adaptation we all know and love. In Andersen's tale, the mermaid sacrifices everything, including her voice, just to be with the prince. But get this—if he marries someone else, she will die and turn into sea foam! Talk about high stakes! The emotional depth is palpable; her longing is more about existential despair than a cute romance. The story also dives into themes like unrequited love and the harsh realities of choices, emphasized by the mermaid’s struggle as she endures physical pain during her transformation into a human. Imagine her walking on sharp knives instead of dancing gracefully at a ball!

Disney, on the other hand, took all those dark elements and replaced them with catchy songs, vibrant colors, and a not-so-crazy happy ending. Sure, Ariel’s journey is about self-discovery, but ultimately she wins the prince over, and they ride off into the sunset together. It’s less about sacrifice and pain and more about finding a romantic partner. While the Disney version offers joy and nostalgia, the original fairy tale has a bittersweet quality that resonates with deeper sadness, offering a very different message about love and desire. In some ways, I appreciate both for what they bring to the table, but I can’t help but get lost in the emotional gravity of Andersen's version every time I revisit it.

It's fascinating how the same story can hold such different meanings across styles; one literally transforms into foam, while the other ends in a happily-ever-after scene, underscoring how audience tastes and expectations shape storytelling. The experience of consuming these versions feels almost like reading different genres altogether—a dark fantasy versus a light-hearted romance! What a journey of emotions!
