Nine By Nine Novels & Stories

At the very end, James placed my hand into Elijah’s. “Kid, she’s yours now. “But remember this. “She’ll always be the daughter of ninety-nine men.” As we exchanged rings, a thunderous roar echoed across the sky. Ninety-nine helicopters formed four giant words overhead. [Congratulations, Newlyweds.] When I was thirty-two, I gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl. Outside the delivery room, ninety-nine white-haired old men packed the entire hallway. The head nurse almost thought a mafia war was about to break out inside the hospital.

On it was a single number—99. It was the number of times they had let me down over the years. Adrian frowned, unable to make sense of it. He tossed my diary onto the floor and ordered, "Stop writing this nonsense. Nina wants to eat the garlic shrimp you make. Go wash your hands and get downstairs. Consider it an apology for that snarky remark you made to her earlier." I only hummed in response before I got up and headed downstairs. Adrian was surprised that I didn't throw a tantrum. After all, every time my family asked me to make garlic shrimp, I would always cry and whine as if it were some huge injustice.

Ninety-nine canceled weddings were enough. This time, I wasn’t waiting anymore. I was going somewhere that truly belonged to me, where I could finally live my own life.

They all say doubtfully. “And how many units?” “Six?” “Exactly! Four nines are thirty-six!” The girls all stare at him as the penny drops. “Do this one,” he says. “Eight times nine.” They all stare at their fingers and count to eight, which turns out to be the middle finger of their right hand. They fold it down, looking at each other to make sure they’ve got the right one. “How many tens?” he asks. “Seven!” “And units?” “Two!”

The paper slipped from his fingers and scattered across the floor. The contract clearly stated: Zoey had been given 99 chances. If he chose her even once, she’d be allowed to stay and marry him. If not—she’d be forced to leave the country and never return. And he… He had chosen Claire. Every. Single. Time. He had ignored Zoey. Let her get hurt. Rejected her. Again and again. What the hell had he done? Adrian leaned against the wall, stunned, unable to breathe. Linda finally spoke.

It was a photo of him in his hospital bed, holding the tiramisu. The caption read: “Thanks, Annie. This is the best comfort dessert ever.” Underneath it, Annie had left a smiley face. I shoved my phone into my pocket, heart hollow. It had been ninety-nine times or maybe more than that. However, whatever the number was, it was time to let go.

After Melody cheated and returned to the family, I started posting online every day. [Is cheating addictive?] [Just how thrilling is cheating, really?] [When a woman cheats, does she feel worse for her kids or her lover?] … I tagged her school in every post, making sure each one appeared right in front of her students, her colleagues, and even her lover. Everyone told me to stop making such an ugly scene and be the bigger person. Only Melody stood up for me. "I'm the one who did something wrong. It's only fair to let Tony vent a little." That lasted until my 99th post. Then Melody stormed in as if she'd lost her mind and smashed my computer. "Anthony, are you ever going to stop? I alr

April. Grace turned nine and a half and announced this milestone at breakfast like it required acknowledgment. "Nine and a half is significant," she said. "In what way," Nathaniel said. "Halfway to ten." She poured her juice. "Ten is significant." "Why." "Double digits." She said it like this was obvious. "Everything changes in double digits." Nathaniel looked at me. I looked back. "Does it," he said to her. "Yes." Certain. "I've been observing."

Mirabelle did not answer his question for she knew that James had ulterior motives. "Can I help you with anything?" She asked. "Should we talk inside?" James asked smilingly. Mirabelle beckoned for James to enter, and she headed into the depths of Mount Nine-Saints. There were nine mountains in the depths of Mount Nine-Saints, and each was as mysterious as the rest as they were formed by the providence of Heaven and Earth. Mount Nine-Saints was one of these mountains, and that was Mirabelle's place of residence. There was a manor at the peak.
