The Untypical Marriage
Like a role I’d been thrown into without rehearsal.
Before I could say anything else, a sharp voice from the end of the table cut through the quiet.
“Hi, Kira. Right?” Nina said, her tone syrupy sweet, fake to the core.
I turned slowly to face her. She was sitting like royalty at the far end of the table, her back perfectly straight, her wine glass untouched but poised between her fingers like a prop.
“We met earlier,” she continued, clearly referencing the lunch she so graciously crashed.
“Yes,” I said, keeping my voice flat. “I remember.”
