"Sorry, but we've been divorced for years." He shook his head desperately and said, "I never signed the divorce papers. That means it doesn't count! We aren't divorced. You're still my wife!" My expression didn't change as I said, "It's been three years. The reconsideration period ended long ago. To me, you're just an unimportant ex-husband now."

I'd been crying all morning and now, at the exact moment I should have shattered, I felt something in my chest just go quiet and cold and still. That was it. That was the last of it, whatever small stupid piece of me had still been waiting for him to be the man from the apartment on Fifth. It died right there between the divorce coverage and the seven-day forecast. "I don't have an ex-wife," I repeated softly. "Aurora." Clara reached for me. "No, he's right." I stood up. My legs held. "He doesn't. She's gone." My phone buzzed in Clara's hand.

He tried to be a good husband for a short time, but it was always clear he wasn’t there with me. “With me dead…. everything that was mine goes to Jyeon. He’s still my husband. My shares, my inheritance, my property, cars, possessions…. The ball remains in your court.” He finished. “Play it.” I rubbed my fingertips against the side of my birthmark. My husband hated it. Well, Ex husband. He could go fuck himself. This same mark he'd berated me for was now a gateway for me to redeem myself as something other than the spineless orphan he'd kicked to the curb. “One year, Jenna. Be mine for one year. What do you say?” My mind raced as I pondered on all of my choices. Ivy deserved a better life.

He nods and darts his eyes towards her. “Jessica… my girlfriend. Jessica Williams is back,” he announces without any atom of shame. “Remember the agreement we had?
