Nolah wiped his face angrily. "I know you all love me. I know our family is good. But… sometimes I wish it were normal. I wish I could say I have just one dad. I wish I didn’t have to explain to anyone." Elias took a deep breath, his broad chest rising and falling. "Look at me, son." Nolah lifted his swollen face. Elias gently held his chin, his calloused thumb wiping away a tear. "Normal is just a word people use to feel safe. It doesn’t mean good. It doesn’t mean right. Our family isn’t normal. It’s rare. It’s strong. It’s built on choices, not obligation."

Ordinary life is moving around us untouched by the chaos that has shaped so much of my world recently. I had spent so long inside the estate and the club that stepping back into regular society felt almost unfamiliar. “You are quiet,” Sofia observed as she drove. “I forgot how normal people live,” I whispered. “That probably means we all needed these moments more than we realised." She said. I looked out the window again. Children crossed streets holding backpacks; couples sat outside cafés drinking coffee. Nobody scanned rooftops for threats; nobody moved, as violence could erupt at any second. The normalcy almost hurt.

"What makes you ask that?" "Some of the kids at school talk about me. They say I'm too mature for my age. That I act like an adult sometimes." My heart squeezed. "You're not weird, Maya. You're special." "Special feels the same as weird." "It's not. Special means you have gifts other people don't have. That doesn't make you weird. It makes you extraordinary." Maya leaned against me. "Sometimes I wish I was just normal. Like the other kids." "Normal is overrated."

He was definitely a special case. Phoenix sighed. “It may be surprising to you, but not all humans are bad you know.” Phoenix said. I frowned. “If you’re talking about yourself then-.” Phoenix waved his hand and cut me off with a smile. “I can’t say anything for myself of course. I’m not the kind of guy to brag about himself.” Phoenix laughed. “I find it distasteful.” He said. My brows furrowed. “Then?” I asked. “I'm talking about normal humans, not invocates or hunters. Like the common villagers we met earlier in Barley.” Phoenix said.

I focused on breathing so my words would come out normal. "And I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Hell, my poor wife. I even think about my little girl, and I get so sick I want to puke. This is the life I chose, but what about them? The people I love and care for?" He shrugged. "I'm not trying to justify what happened, or what he said, I just want you to try to understand that as much as people say celebrities are just like you." He licked his lips and smirked. "We're not. We won't ever be normal."

I asked, putting my groceries back into the paper bag. "I'm surprised but I wouldn't be for too long. I never thought this would actually happen to me. Ever." She giggled.
