As far as family goes, they’re all I have… and Tyler doesn’t know anyone else. The thought hits me out of nowhere. They’re my family—but is Tyler part of it now, just because we’re married? Even though the marriage wasn’t planned and I’m only staying here for three months? What do I even call him that doesn't sound strange? He’s my husband… but is he a part of my family? This wasn’t supposed to be so complicated. When I reach my room, I unlock my phone. Several missed calls from my uncle and aunt. Two messages from Max. One from Vanessa. A few emails—definitely work-related—so I ignore them.

She asks as we step out into the night. I do a quick review of my family members in my head and chuckle. “Don’t take anything from anyone. Not even water.” “What?” She exclaims with her eyes open. “It’s that bad?” “Just stick to me.” I say, gripping her hand a little tighter. My family members aren’t evil but greed and jealousy are not the best traits for a family that loves power and money. In fact, the stupid birthdays and excessive weddings only show how much we love each other in ways that are not money related.

"I want to make him happy. That's all." "Sure. I mean, I'm sure you can see past his grumpy personality, but it must also help that he is loaded, for you and your family, right?" "M-My family?" I cackled, pointing a finger to myself. "I grew up without a dad, my mom never cared that much, neither do my siblings. I've been working for as long as I can remember, a-and I don't mind working!" Just family. Just home.

Family didn’t work like that. I missed my Family so much....

She doesn't deserve you at all! "Enough!" Dad interrupted loudly, looking at his crude daughter in disbelief. "Adriana, how can you talk about your sister like that? She was disfigured because of you! And Jonathan is your sister's husband. How can you harbor such thoughts? If people heard this, the Lane family's reputation would be ruined!" Mom opened her mouth, seemingly somewhat disapproving. "I think it's fine, actually. Love is about mutual feelings, isn't it?" Hearing that, I could not help but laugh.

I chewed the apple and said, a little muffled, "Yeah, sounds great. Is Dad paying?" My father, who had just walked by, shouted, "Of course. Buy whatever you want. If it makes you happy, I'll buy the whole auction house." See? This was life in a wealthy family. Simple and, honestly, a little boring. Sure, every now and then, some clueless idiot would show up and try to stir things up. But as long as we stuck together, nothing could really touch us. After all, we were a happy, loving family.

Their faces twisted in confusion, anxiety flickering in their eyes. Whenever they wanted me to give something up, they’d slap me with one hand and offer candy with the other. It never failed to work. All they had to do was take the first step and reach out, and I’d cave every time. This time, no one was on the other end of the call, eagerly calling them “Mom” and “Dad.” “Honey, Laura’s not exactly the sharpest at work, so why do you keep spoiling her? When we’re gone, she’ll burn through the family’s fortune in no time.
