HER ROCK Chapter 1 Ella's POV: Lonely is a word I could use to describe myself. Sure I have friends, well if you could even call them that, more like acquaintances. But that's all they are. I don't like to hang out or go to after school games or events. I would rather be alone at home in my room reading or watching Netflix. When my friends ask to hang out, which is very rare, I make up some lame excuse so I don't have to.

Right before the syndicate's power handover, I flew back to New York after a year of studying jewelry design in Europe. But the night before the ceremony, my secret boyfriend of three years—the Rossi family's new second-in-command—sent me a text: [Sorry, Chloe. I lost a card game, and you were my chip. You're his problem now.] Before I could even breathe, I got tagged in the family's encrypted dark-web channel. The top thread was blowing up: [The Mafia Boss Just Won a Fat Pig for a Girlfriend!] Pinned right at the top was an old photo of me from a few years ago. Back when I was 180 pounds. The comment section was ruthless: [If the Boss knew what he actually won, he'd regret making that bet.]

I asked, quickly diverting the topic. Her eyes sparkled in delight as she showed me the front cover of the book. "It's a new book I bought! It's about childhood friends who eventually turn into lovers. They've done everything together since they were kids, so they never really viewed each other as potential lovers. However, when they stepped into college and decided to be roommates, they started seeing each other in a different light. It's so good! And I'm at the part where the guy is finally going to propose to the girl!"

And that was a year ago from today. I have always been alone. I got a job at publishing, but I didn’t get to make friends because of the pandemic. Also, I’m not good at making friends, so there’s that. I’m awkward and self-contained. The closest thing to a friend I have right now is Nelson, from next door, who’s an even bigger bibliophile than I am.

She sniffles again, more tears falling down her face before she shakes her head. "Not really. I don't have any family here and I haven't really made a lot of friends yet. I haven't lived here very long." She says and I let out a frustrated breath, totally unsure of what to do. I wish the fucking book club ladies were here right now. I could use some advice.

“Is Adam new in your class? I don’t remember hearing you talk about him before.” “He’s not in my class.,” she admitted. “But he invited Aisha and she’s in my class.” “Oh sweetheart. I’m sure he would have invited you if you were in his class. If he invited someone else in your class, he must know Aisha, even though she’s not in your class. Did we invite Adam to your birthday last year?” She shrugged her little shoulders. “No.” Despite not being classmates with the boy and obviously not being friends with him—since we hadn’t invited him to her birthday—it was clear she was bummed about not having been invited to the party.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, putting the thought of Matthew to the back of her mind and trying to focus on the present. They were once friends but it was all in the past now. She now had new friends and was now closer to her old friend, Silver than she had ever thought. This was all she needed all along, some girlfriends and a boy that could be hers. Picking her book and taking a look at the picture again, she closed her locker and proceeded to class. ******************

There's More to it and I'm going to find out. I check every drawer in the room for a jotter and pen but there's nothing, I don't have my phone, iPad or laptop with me to draft my move so I made mentally note. First, I need to make friends. I need to get close to people in this house. Is that possible? I don't think so Will I try it? Hell yeah!. I'm not sure of the outcome but at least I have Ace now. One at a time.
