Okay, so 'Alana' is one of those web serials I kept seeing pop up on Kindle Unlimited and I finally gave in. The main thrust is about this woman named Alana who wakes up in a completely different body in a fantasy world that's obsessed with a card-based magic system, but she's got the memories and emotional scars of her past life as a soldier. It's less about 'whoa, magic is cool' and more about her trying to navigate court politics and these rigid societal roles while dealing with severe PTSD.
The plot really gets going when she's forced into a marriage of convenience with a duke from a rival nation, all while hiding her true origins and that she's basically a walking repository of lost military tactics. The magic system with the cards is intricate, but honestly, I kept reading for the character interactions—the way her trauma clashes with the expectations placed on her is handled with a surprising amount of care, and her slow-burn relationship with the duke is fraught with mistrust and political maneuvering. It kinda loses steam in the second volume for a bit when the focus shifts to a tournament arc, but picks back up when the external threats to the kingdom become more personal.
