As soon as I stepped outside, a figure rushed toward me. His lips were cracked, his hair disheveled, his face unshaven, and his entire body reeked of someone who hadn’t bathed or changed clothes for days. He had changed so much that it took me several seconds to recognize him—this pitiful, wrecked man was actually Charlie. He looked as if he had finally found a single lifeline and rasped, “Help me, Kendall. I truly have nowhere to go. I only have you left. I’m begging you…”

"Charlie, is that really what you think of me? You actually believe I'd do something like that? I just wanted to curl my hair. I never thought it would catch fire. "Why would you accuse me of something like that? Are you seriously buying into Lucia's lies, too? She's hated me ever since I took first place! How could you believe her?" She brushed away her tears and looked up at him. Charlie's expression was unreadable as he pulled out his phone and tapped on a video.

Cars passed slowly across the rain-dark roads nearby while cool wind brushed softly through Elara’s loose hair. She should’ve gone home already. She should’ve ended this conversation long ago. Yet neither of them seemed in a hurry to leave. Strange. Dangerous. “You know,” Charlie said suddenly, “you’re not what I thought you were.” Elara looked at him quietly. “What did you think I was?” He actually considered the question seriously. “Quiet.” Her lips curved faintly. “I am quiet.” “No.” Charlie shook his head slightly. “You’re reserved." The words hit something deep inside her unexpectedly.

Eleanor wanted to say something on my behalf, but I subtly shook my head to stop her. Charlie suddenly walked up and stood behind Eleanor's side, his entire demeanor shifting as he sized Eleanor up. He stared at Eleanor's priceless watch, his eyes gleaming with interest. "It must be so dull sleeping with an old man like Shawn." He then leaned close and whispered in Eleanor's ear, "You should give me a chance instead. I'm younger and much more interesting than Shawn."

He even paraded other women in front of me, claiming that even if he'd once loved me, he was justified in playing around now. I felt a deep sense of relief that I hadn't kept the child. Even if he married me, Charlie would have continued his sordid escapades. As their moans filled the air once again, I exited the interface and deleted the account. The next morning, Charlie called me. It was the first time he'd reached out since his incident. I didn't answer. When he couldn't get through, he sent a message. Charlie: [Eve, what's the meaning of this? I agreed to marry you, so why did you throw away all the wedding items at home?]

"That is... that is monstrous, Charlie. How could she do something like that to another mother?" "Because she’s a desperate, pathetic loser who couldn't keep me and couldn't get Tyler on her own merits," Charlie sneered, standing up to pace the room again, his hands gesturing wildly. Sarah is her mouthpiece, the public boss of that new firm, and she’ll want Elara there to celebrate their 'victory' over the Vances. But I am going to turn that celebration into her public execution."
