“Stop. He’s coming. You don’t understand what he’ll do.” He didn’t let go. He glanced over my shoulder at the corridor, then back to the room. His jaw locked. He bent his head, mouth brushing my ear. “Get inside, now.” He moved me through the doorway. The doctor opened his mouth to argue but one look from the stranger silenced him. “Lock the door,” the man ordered. “Do not open this door until you hear me knocking.” The doctor swallowed, nodded, and the lock clicked.

My first instinct was to get back in a taxi, go to a proper hotel, abandon this entire insane plan. But I thought about Dr. Morrison's face when he'd said "two years." I thought about my father forgetting who I was a little more each day. I thought about Chen Industries falling apart because I had no heir to leave it to. I walked up to the building. There was no doorbell, no proper door even. Just an opening that led into a dark hallway that smelled like mold, cooking spices, something else I couldn't identify. I stepped inside, let my eyes adjust to the dim light.

It was quiet, almost sacred, with sunlight streaming through the large windows and rows of books inviting me to lose myself in their worlds. I wandered through the aisles aimlessly until I stumbled across a section on business biographies. My fingers hovered over the spines until I spotted one that looked familiar: Against All Odds: The Rise of Evan Bennett. I pulled the book from the shelf, my heart racing. I hadn't known a biography about him existed. The cover featured a candid photo of Evan, his piercing eyes staring directly at the camera.

The rest of the night was a blur. Her leading me up to my room. Unlocking the door and pushing me in. Me stumbling to my bed, my breath racing, heart pumping. Needy and desperate for someone's touch.
