I turned it over in my hands and felt the familiar weight of it, this book I had first read at fifteen and had returned to every year until I was twenty-two and had not opened since because there had been no room in Josiah's house for the kind of woman who read Jane Eyre and meant it. My phone lit up on the nightstand.

On Monday, it was an overwhelming arrangement of rare white peonies and dark crimson roses. On Tuesday, a private courier delivered artisanal gelato and handmade Swiss chocolates in an understated gold box. By Thursday, it was a rare, leather-bound first edition of a classic Victorian romance novel with a handwritten note tucked inside that read: Page 142 reminds me of your purr. Jane had frantically hidden the note under her keyboard before anyone could read it, her face burning like a furnace.

POV MARIUS Had she gone mad? Jane had dark almond shaped eyes, curly hair, and a small face. She was tiny in every way, yet her chin was lifted and her body firm. Jane’s POV I felt like if I blinked for one second, I would miss it all. It was heat and cold altogether, embracing me. It had to be the waves and the cold it carried. I wrapped my hand around my frame, wishing I hadn’t listened to Laura and her choice of clothing. Wishing I hadn’t come here at all. Because, deep down, I knew all it took was one wrong move. He looked like the night, with dark hair falling across his face, dark eyes, and an imposingly tall frame. He overshadowed everyone easily, and I had to remind myself to breathe.
