She turned her closet inside out to find the right outfit for the occasion. Jan was on the other side of the video call rolling her eyes dozens of times, shaking her head, telling her over and over again that the oversized white Tee-Shirt she wanted to wear was not a good choice. But she really wanted to wear it. It was her favorite. It was Lee's that she had traded with her favorite bucket hat. "No ... you look like you're wearing your brother's shirt that's too big for you ... just wear that knitted crop sweater over your outfit, the one with mixed color," she knew literally everything Hazel had in her closet.

Two pairs of denim jeans, two pairs of hoodies, one white shirt, one black top, and two dresses were both gifts from Teddy and his wife, either for my birthdays or some special occasion. Knox used to make fun of my clothing. One time I was wearing a black hoodie with some Japanese anime cartoon inked on it. I liked the hoodie because it was something I bought with my money. Although that piece was cheap, it was something I had a different sort of feeling toward. The excitement that I felt at that moment couldn’t be expressed in words.

With money being so tight, shopping for clothes that I'd rarely wear isn't high on my priority list. Tess rummaged through her wardrobe and pulled out a red, strapless, knee length dress that she handed to me. “This is perfect,” she says as I hold the dress up against my body. “I don't know, you don't think it's a little too much for Shennanigans?” I ask. The bar is aimed at struggling uni students looking for cheap drinks and this dress is pretty formal. “No, you need to show that man what he's missing out on,” Tess advises.

Silky fabric, open back, slit high enough to make me want to slam the closet shut. “Absolutely not,” I said immediately. “Absolutely yes.” She shoved it against my chest. “This one’s perfect.” “It screams desperation.” “It screams gorgeous,” Nova shot back. “You’ve got dresses like this sitting here collecting dust, and you’d rather hide behind ripped jeans. Not tonight. Not on your birthday.” I looked down at the fabric in my hands, heat creeping into my face. “Nova, I don’t…” Her voice softened. “Tess. Let yourself be celebrated. Just this once.”

“Where’d you get it?” Now with pants on, Maise shot me one of her infamous glares, two toned eyes admonishing me for teasing her as she tied up the ends so it wasn’t hanging like a dress. “Whomever packed for me packed exclusively band tees, leather jackets, and sleep wear. I’m not sure if you noticed, but it’s winter. I wanted sleeves.” And there was the spice. I closed the distance between us and snagged the collar of my shirt, pulling her even closer. “I suppose you can keep this one. It suits you.”
