I struggled to choose what book to read to him, since it occurred to me, belatedly, that I have no idea what my Master reads for pleasure. I try to choose something classic instead, something appropriate; but ´Wuthering Heights´, with Cathy, Heathcliff and Edgar, and their doomed love triangle, isn´t right. Neither is ´Gone with the Wind´, with Scarlett, Rhett and Ashley. ´Pride and Prejudice´, ´Jane Eyre´, ´Anna Karenina´, all dwell on the failure of three lovers to make their situation work. In the end, I choose something very different, ´Time Enough for Love´, an old 1970´s Sci-fi novel, in which the characters make their polyamorous family work.

My hands are already soaked with tears. I start to cry without my consent. My whole body quivers as I cry for what Hans and I once were. I cry for who I was once. I cry for his rightful hatred of me. I cry for the love he once had for me. I cry because no matter how much I had hoped for it in the past, the truth is I’m never getting him back. He’ll fall in love with someone else and I’ll be stuck with Zeke til the day I die. Or he does. Whichever comes first. That thought only makes me cry harder.

Even so, the whole process feels like a battle, and I am already exhausted by the time I have the books in my hands. I still read romantic novels. There is something comforting about them, even if some of the stories hit a little too close to home. Some of the plots are eerily similar to my own life, while others are pure escapism—beautiful, heartwarming tales from start to finish. Sure, the characters face hardships and tribulations, but what always stands out to me is the love and trust between the couples. It is the kind of love that feels unshakable, the kind I used to dream about. Now, I am not so sure if that kind of love exists for me anymore.

Not anymore, though. I broke up with him thinking that if we are meant to be together, we will find a way back to each other. I was even pretty sure that we were meant to be together. Seems like his love towards me was only this strong to make him forget about me and get married to another girl within five years. We were just never meant to be. I helped him fall in love. I wonder who is going to help me fall in love again. I wish I never met him. I don't regret the memories I made. I just regret falling in love with him.
