My claws scraped through nothing as it bent wrong beneath me and shoved upward, spine arching like a bow ready to snap. Beta Aldin was there in an instant, jaws snapping shut on its arm, teeth sinking down with a crack of breaking bone. For a moment, the intruder buckled, half-pinned by both of us. Then its free hand lashed upward, talons tearing through Aldin's shoulder. His howl shook the ground. Donna's blade sang again, stabbing down through the intruder's temple. This time the steel stuck. The thing spasmed, claw twitching mid-air, as if its body couldn't decide whether to collapse or lunge again.

As she turned, Millie saw a young man with disheveled blonde hair. He was dressed casually and looked like a thug. At that moment, he was sizing Rachel up. The man, Quincy Sanders, leaned in closer and suddenly asked, "You're Rachel Shaw, aren't you?" Millie quickly stepped forward to shield Rachel behind her. She eyed Quincy before her cautiously and replied with a smile, "No, you've got the wrong person."

I guess even though it had been decades, they were never going to let it go. I stepped into the mansion, and Rose Eagan froze in her track when she saw me. I probably looked like a demon from hell with the blood of the guards dripping from my knuckles and specks of it dotting my white shirt in different places. The backward comments and jibes continued from the popular girls led mainly by Mila Monday morning.
