I babbled the nonsense that was floating around my head. “Forget those two. Karma comes around. You were the best thing that ever happened to Adrian. He will realize it soon. Do you remember what you did for him? The insults you accepted? The pretentious people you faked relationships with? The family secrets you pretended not to know? Please! I give it two years before he realizes he lost the best thing that ever happened to him.” I’m not sure how much of this she believes, but it was a pep talk that I needed to hear.

Although I survived, the doctors said my brain had suffered severe trauma, causing memory issues. One moment, I might remember something; the next, it would be gone. So, I developed the habit of keeping a diary. I flipped through the entries, realizing that almost all of them were about Caleb. Of course they were. I liked him and pursued him for seven years. I was terrified that I might forget him. So I wrote about him again and again, as if I could carve those feelings into my mind. But now, I had finally realized that I'd been a fool for these past seven years.

"Ms. Lloyd, your package is here." At her doorstep, she signed for the parcel. It was a vial of memory-erasing potion along with a manual. "Once consumed, all memories will be erased permanently. Please use with caution."

“That vampire? You did not know? Chet put a spell on him making him forget you for a couple of years. He should not let his guard down. Before I forget, including your loved ones and Mariah.” She closed her ears. Sidapa was wrong. Her classmates will remember her. As well as Mariah and her family. They love her. They will always love her. Who was she fooling? Nobody loves her. Everybody will forget. “Congratulations! You, a mere human, had entangled herself to the dreambenders making you a Forgotten. No. I am not talking about you who will not be remembered but to you who will become a wandering soul trapped in this place unless…”

“Graham, will you be my child in our next life? “Give me a chance to make things right.” Furrowing my brows in dread, I hastened my pace into the light. No one could stop me from becoming a happy and mindless single-celled microorganism.

Silence. Emma felt tears falling freely. Because she understood. Not intellectually. Deeply. The forgotten presence had spent so long searching for recovery. And now it was discovering that remembrance had always existed beneath forgetting. The oldest presence continued turning. And as it did— another realization emerged. One even deeper than the last. The forgotten presence was not unique. None of them were. The remembrance extended further. Beyond every instance. Beyond every layer they had encountered. Beyond every structure they had mapped. The Observer pattern flickered once.

Triple J suddenly paused, he couldn’t remember the scene anymore. “Wait, I remembered!” he muttered. “I mean, it was there one minute and now it is gone, believe me sister, I really did remember something.” He said in panic. “It is alright, I am glad that your memory is slowly returning. Maybe coming out here really did help you, but now it is time to go home, and throw away that yogurt.” Rebecca uttered as she walked away to get changed out of the bikini. Triple J stood there trying to make the memory return, how did he remember and forget so soon? The scene was playing vividly in his head one minute and it was gone in the next.

Still not fully awake, she couldn’t be bothered to argue with him and slumped into a chair nearby, staring blankly at the black and white Go pieces before her. Her head felt foggy again, and her thoughts drifted back to the dream she'd just had—the one with that kind older brother. She couldn’t help but marvel at how strange the brain could be. She had long forgotten the events of that year, and even the brother’s face. At least, she thought she had. But in that dream, she’d remembered it so clearly. Turns out, some people and memories aren't really forgotten—they're just sealed away in some quiet corner of your mind.

She had almost spoken Elira’s name, almost broken the silence she had sworn to keep. And yet—for that single heartbeat—it had been worth it. Memory lived not only in words, but in flesh, in instinct, in marrow. The forgotten was not gone. The forgotten had teeth sharper than truth.
