The rest of their shift passed in a blur of clinking cups, chatter, and the hiss of the coffee machine. Jerry moved mechanically, all the while avoiding prolonged eye contact with Laura.
Meanwhile, she seemed distracted, her movements deliberate but her mind clearly elsewhere.
By the end of the day, both were exhausted. The cafe lights dimmed as Jerry and Laura locked up and headed their separate ways.
Laura sank into her seat in the cab, her head leaned against the window. The rhythmic hum of the engine should have been comforting, but her thoughts swirled like a storm and refused to settle.
