Magic they feared. I run my fingers across the cracked spines until I find what I’m looking for: Ancient Witchcraft of the Forgotten Era. Bound in deep green leather, barely holding together. The writing on the cover is almost worn off. I carry it to one of the heavy tables near the back and sit. The pages whisper as I turn them, the old ink uneven, some parts blurred by time or water damage. Spells of healing. Curses of madness. Rituals of possession. Nothing I haven’t seen before—

There where now books with titles such as The Witch Within You, Herbs and Pentagrams, Spells and the Sabbaths, True Magic in the World. Maddie had never noticed that there were so many books on that subject. She was shocked when Omem suddenly stood in front of her. ‘Are you coming, child? Lunch is ready.’ Maddie nodded and left the library.

That was all, but I had been wary of the knowing smile he had given me for a split second. "Yes." I muttered, waiting for him to leave before I opened the book. "That would be all." He bowed, leaving the room. The librarian wasn't an old man with a face covered in grey hairs. He was young, older than I was, but younger than the stereotype and definitely weirder. I scanned the book and realised the order of druids contained spells translated to English. These were too useful to be locked away and forgotten inside this dark, cold room. The book listed the spells numbered in ascending order. A few of them had symbols next to them and a how-to-use description attached to it.

Elias nodded and sprinted off. I stayed beside Selene, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You’re stronger than this,” I muttered. “Come on, fight it.” Elias returned a moment later with the thick, ancient spellbook. Its leather cover was worn and pulsing faintly as if the spell was still active within it. He opened the book carefully and flipped through the pages until he found the right one. “There,” he said, pointing at the incantation written in crimson ink. “It’s a disappearance spell. Meant to send the victim to a limbo or a location chosen by the caster.”

Olivia said. When Olivia entered Jill’s room, she was ready with the book of shadows. This was a secret book that the three girls kept for writing down spells as they came across them. Most of the spell in the book had been copied from William’s spell book and of course, he was unaware of this. “This spell is quite vague and not tested,” Jill said. “Remember we didn’t find any log-entry for this spell. Records say that no one has used this spell before so there’s no way we can tell it works.”

Caitlin summoned her knowledge of Latin, and knew that translated to: Three Books of Charms, Spells and Sorceries. Intrigued, she turned the cover, and saw that it was all in Latin. Luckily, her Latin was still good enough for her to translate in her head. The long title page read: “In which all the species and causes of spells are described and explained with the Philosophers and Theologians. With the ways to fight the illusions of Demons, and the refutation of the causes behind the power of Witchcraft. 1589. Venice.” Caitlin dove into the book, scanning through, turning the pages as fast as she could, looking for any mention of vampires, of how to heal or cure one, how to bring one back to

Aurora’s POV I wiped my hands after the entire process was done, and exited the bathroom, only to see Elder Miriam take out two books and hand them to me. “What;s this?” I asked, curious but at the same time afraid of the answer. “This one is on runes and spells, those enchantments that could either help or hinder you,” Elder Miriam pointed to the dark leather bound book. Then the smaller one. “This one is on herbs, study it. It will augment your expertise as a doctor, and trust me, you will need it. If you have any questions, I will answer them for you.”

The night was thick with frost, the kind that clung to every breath like a warning. Jon Hale stood at the edge of Maelin's ruined study, the shattered remains of her spellbooks scattered beneath his boots. The books were still asleep. Some flying, while others glided staggerly around the room. The mystical blue lights that accompanied them along their journeys were also faint and dull. I went over to the barrier protection shelf and picked up a spell book written in the B.C era, along with an ancient thesaurus picture book.

Empty. Good. No whispers. Just rows of books that smelled faintly of dust and old leather. I drifted between shelves, trailing my fingers along worn spines. “Herbs of the Southern Marsh,” “Defense Spells of the Fifth Era,” “Principles of Alchemy.” My guards hovered like anxious statues. And then— I stopped. My hand froze on a spine I hadn’t seen in years. The leather was scuffed, the gold lettering half-burnt, but my heart recognized it before my mind did.
