THE LINE BETWEEN US

THE LINE BETWEEN US

Just the faint sound of him breathing on the other end, steady but uneven, and the quiet hum of the night around me. When he finally spoke again, his voice was smaller, fragile. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” “Tomorrow,” I echoed, clutching the phone like it was the only thing anchoring me to reality. “Get some sleep, Autumn.” “You too.” “Goodnight.” “Goodnight, Taylor.” The line clicked off. For several seconds, I just sat there in the dark, staring at my phone screen like it might light up again. But it didn’t. The silence that followed felt strange, empty but not hollow.

The Love Hate Line

The Love Hate Line

“What is this?” Thomas didn’t even flinch. He let out a dry, frustrated laugh and shook his head, looking at the banker with an expression of pure annoyance. “Are you kidding me? This is exactly why I hate these systems. My old records from the university abroad must have pulled some old data from when Monica helped me with my visa paperwork.”

You'd planned everything down to a T, didn't you? "You even factored in how your mother would brag about your rich boyfriend in the group chat. Cassandra, do you really hate me that much?"

Cross the Line, Cross Them Out

Cross the Line, Cross Them Out

"You dare mock me? I'll have Imogen fire every single one of you!" The manager sighed, ready to explain, but I raised a hand to stop him, facing Thomas's anger head-on. "They say Imogen Slater is beautiful and wealthy, with a lot of admirers. How do we know you're not just another impostor? Prove it with maybe a phone call?" Thomas fumbled for his phone, all thunder and bravado. "Laugh while you can! I'll make you regret this!" A growing crowd pressed against the glass doors outside, eager for the spectacle. He dialed repeatedly, but each attempt met the same automated voice: "The subscriber you have reached is powered off."

Off Limits

Callie The whole town had spilled onto Main Street for the Fall Festival—music, laughter, and the sugary scent of roasted nuts in the air. Strings of lights hung above the crowd. I should have been happy. Grayson’s hand brushed mine as we moved between stalls, but something inside me was restless… like I was waiting for something to break. Mary stood by the cider stand, flawless as ever in her wine-colored coat. She smiled when she saw us. “Grayson,” she called, lifting her cup. “I didn’t think you would actually show up.”

"We did it. The line is clear." There was no answer from the van. Only the steady, comforting sound of his breathing, deep and unbroken, holding the line with me in the quiet space between the chaos and the dawn.

Outside the Lines You Drew

Outside the Lines You Drew

I tapped accept. A line appeared on the screen. [Assignment term: three years. Destination: Havenmist branch. Please report to your assigned location by this Saturday.] Today was Wednesday. There were three days left before both my wedding and my departure. Simon Carver saw me looking down at my phone, and his frown deepened. "Maren, I'm talking to you." I locked my phone and looked up at him. "Mm. I heard you." He probably hadn't expected me to be so calm.

Frequently Asked Questions

The main characters in 'On the Line' are a fascinating bunch, each bringing their own flavor to the story. First up, we have the protagonist, a determined and slightly reckless journalist named Ethan. He's the kind of guy who dives headfirst into danger just to get the scoop, and his relentless pursuit of the truth drives the plot forward. Then there's Sarah, a brilliant but cynical detective who’s seen too much to believe in happy endings. Her dynamic with Ethan is electric—they clash constantly, but their mutual respect grows as the story unfolds.

Rounding out the trio is Marcus, a tech genius with a shady past. He’s the guy behind the scenes, hacking systems and uncovering secrets that Ethan and Sarah couldn’t access on their own. His humor and laid-back attitude provide some much-needed levity in an otherwise intense narrative. Together, these three form an unlikely team, each with their own strengths and flaws, making 'On the Line' a gripping read from start to finish.
