“I came to make sure no one here gets ideas. Damien dying was unfortunate. But he played with fire. You know that. I know that. You don’t have to pretend otherwise.” One of the old guys shifted like he wanted to say something. I looked at him, then back at the kid. “You’ve got whispers floating through this room. Marco’s name coming up too much. Like maybe he’s still got something. Let me tell you something clear. He’s got nothing.” I stepped forward. “He’s got no wife. No soldiers worth their guns. No power. He’s scrambling like a corner rat, and all he’s gonna do is bleed.” The kid crossed his arms, trying to look firm. “We’ve lost a lot.”

"Marcus is in the nursery. If they get past me... you know what to do." He lunged into the hallway, his movements a blur of desperate, self-destructive speed. Phoenix stood up, drawing her silver-alloy blades. Her heart was hammering a rhythm of war, the tinnitus in her ears now a deafening roar. "I'm not staying anywhere, Blackwood," she whispered to the shadows. She looked at her hand—the one that had almost reached for him. It was steady now. Cold. Ready to kill. "If they want the White Wolf," Phoenix hissed, her hazel eyes reflecting the first flickers of blue fire from the courtyard, "I'll show them the mother who raised him."

He was stunned for a moment, but his reaction was too late because I already had him by his neck. But what I didn’t expect was that a group of rogues would come and took me away from him. Marco shifted back to his human form and laughed, “You think you can win this war? No! You don’t know me at all,” he said, and he was fast because he was in front of me in seconds with his right hand on my heart ready to rip it. He was about to but he was thrown away by a big blow from Marcus.

I turned to him quickly and whispered, “Be nice.” Marco smirked as he stood, reaching for the wine bottle on the sideboard. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to strike a nerve. It was just a story.” As he poured the wine, he walked slowly back toward the table. He passed by Kael. Marco set the bottle down... and his hand briefly touched the edge of the table beside Kael. Kael twitched. His back straightened. A pulse of light appeared on Marco’s palm. It was faint and barely there. It was a strange rune I didn’t recognize.

I had cried and caused a scene—at one point even pointing a gun at Fiora's head, threatening to drive her out of Novaris and make it impossible for her to survive in Arinthia. Marco, the proud Don of the DeLuca Famiglia and the ruler of the criminal underworld of Novaris, actually kneeled before me. He told me he would end it once and for all. He claimed it was a temporary lapse in judgment. He swore he would send Fiora to the western side of Arinthia and cut all ties. I looked at my bloodshot eyes in the mirror back then and chose to give Marco another chance, but now, I wanted nothing more to do with him.

I looked over to his direction and we saw the both of them whispering something and pointing at a direction. “Marco really likes him. For the most important part of it, it doesn't appear to be so but I know he really likes him.” I replied. “Marco doesn't really know how to be his emotions, he prefers to be on his own. It's how he has always been but he's a good team players regardless.” Stefano said nodding his head, as though trying to assure me of his uniqueness. “You certainly have the best people around you. Don't you think?”

The kind of silence that happens after the pin is pulled but before the explosion. "Found you," he whispers. He doesn't raise his rifle. He lowers it. He slings it over his shoulder. He pulls a knife from his vest—a serrated hunting blade that glints in the red emergency light. "Don't shoot her," Marco commands his men. "I want to carve the debt out of her myself." He steps toward me. He thinks I am the girl who served wine. He thinks I am the girl who stood in the rain and let men sell her.

“You’re aware of his fate, aren’t you?” Marco Czeslaw, Sanguine’s alpha whose mate was from the other side of our world. I remember that time just before Laxon Academy’s graduation and before I left Claveria, a battle on the eastern oceans has erupted. If I recall it precisely, Sanguine and Nightwindewereas leading it.

He laughs and so does his mom. I scowl at him. “I will only regret if I will not marry you.” “If you say it like you are so serious.” “Aren’t you?” “Am I? “Are you?” “Seriously?” “Yes?” “Yes!” “Guys!” Phoenix stands up quickly and claps his hand to get everyone’s attention. Their eyes are on us now even the guys that don’t look familiar to me. I guess they are their friends that Abby was telling while we were on the balcony.

“Wait—what?” Even Xavier’s brows furrowed slightly, his phone lowering. “Romance-themed?” Marco’s smile widened, clearly enjoying our reactions. “Yes. Holding hands, soft gazes, leaning in… maybe even a kiss for one or two shots.” I felt heat instantly creep into my cheeks. “A kiss? Marco, are you serious?” He shrugged like it was no big deal. “You’ve both signed contracts. And—” He reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone, and began scrolling. “Let me show you something.”
