Alice closed her eyes, waiting for the sound of gunshots.

I just took her shaking hand in mine, even though I shouldn’t have. “Whatever it takes,” I said finally. “Even if it means burning everything down.” Her eyes widened, not from my words but from the tiny red dot burning on my chest.
