Part One: Raw Edge of Danger Tampa, Florida. Home of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, the Lightning hockey team, the Buccaneers football team, the Gasparilla Festival, palm trees, oppressive heat, and the fucking lovebugs. Fucking lovebugs. If anyone ever found a way to eradicate the damn pests, Grey Holden had no doubt they could be president or anything else they wanted. Not the climate a native of Montana would have chosen for his headquarters. But the choice had not been his. Circumstances called the shots on this one.

His eyes adjusted to a dark stormy gray as his black shaggy hair fell to his collarbone. “Sorry I have really poor vision in my shark form. I could smell the scent of sea witch on you, and came to investigate. Especially since I smelled royal blood nearby too.” He explained. “Oh that would be me.” Helena raised her finger. “I’m a Nox.” I forget that Uncle Kellan is related to a siren queen and king. “We attend the Academy in the west. You’re smelling my friend.” Nova explained. She was talking about Manny. Why did she smell so much like him that a shark could pick it up? What was she doing before she saw Ares?

Sofia asked, linking arms with Elena. “Exhausting,” Elena groaned. “My hand feels broken.” Killian laughed. “That’s the sign of a true scholar.” “Or a true victim,” Elena muttered. James grinned. “Well, then tonight calls for celebration. Club night! Drinks, music, dancing. It’s mandatory. We need to wash the taste of existential dread out of our mouths with overpriced vodka.” “Yes! Absolutely!” Sofia agreed, bouncing on her heels. “The new place downtown, ‘Onyx.’ I heard it’s impossible to get in, but David’s cousin knows the bouncer.”

A minute or so later, he finally nodded, but she didn’t release him. Onyx inhaled deeply, preparing himself to go back to a time that he hated—preparing himself to reveal something that might make his job to earn a place in her life even harder. “I wasn’t born in the Dawn Pack. My family is originally from a pack in Manhattan. They don’t have a plot of land; they purchased an apartment block that’s near a wooded area. The entire pack lives inside the block, and they use the wooded area to run in. One day, I was walking with my sister through the woods when we came across four human males. Their ages ranged from seventeen to twenty-one.”

They need me to sign off on different things and, of course, have one annoying question. This is why I’m on a zoom meeting with the sub-Betas of the other cities my pack lives in throughout my territory. “When do we get to meet this new Luna we’ve heard about?” Wade questioned with a smirk. I sighed as this sent Robert and Brett into a frenzy as well.

Assistant Onyx conveyed. "Prepare."

what would I be? I would be a burden, I told myself. I tossed the phone back onto the seat, started the engine, and drove off. The Onyx Room was dark, loud, and expensive. It was the kind of members-only club where captains of industry went to hide in plain sight, where the lighting was kept deliberately low so no one could see who was drinking with whom. It was perfect. I sat at the bar, the thumping bass of the house music vibrating through the stool and into my spine. "Double Grey Goose. Neat," I told the bartender, a man in a black vest who looked like he had seen everything twice.

And this is how it went: Roselyn: Hey, I am Roselyn. Katelyn: Hey, I am Katelyn. Joselyn: Nice to meet you guys! I am Joselyn. Rose/ Kate: Nice to meet you too! Awkward silence. Katelyn: Where are you from? Joslyn: I come from Brooklyn. Another awkward silence. Scratching's at the table. Roselyn: What's that noise? Joselyn: Someone's scratching at the table. Roselyn: Aahh.

She wanted to slap herself in the face. He looked taken back by the question. “18,” he answered. “I’m the Alpha of Onyxfang.” Onyxfang. Ronnie has heard of Onyxfang; she heard that’s where the dangerous wolves live and to steer clear of that area. But Erick didn’t seem like a dangerous wolf. Yes, he was big. But he seemed gentle and caring. He was waiting outside for Arina and Jonathan, probably on standby for protection in case Rock tried anything stupid.
