There was no way she was going to tell Carol she had overslept as a result of staying up all night trying to finish up an article. Specifically, because Carol disliked excuses. “Excuses won't do the job,” she'd always say. “I'm sorry,” Emily finally spoke reverently after Carol gave her a sideways glance. Carol ignored Emily and pulled out a file with a picture on it, dumping it in front of her, “Rex Hale. Billionaire tech mogul. I need an interview from him.” Huh? Emily frowned slightly as she flipped through the pages. Clearly, this wasn't what she had expected.

I said with a smile. Her eyes lit up with recognition. "Oh! You're the Gonzalezes! In the Miller beach house! We're so glad someone is finally living there year-round." She leaned in conspiratorially. "We have a weekly book club. Tuesdays at ten. We're starting a new mystery next week. Nothing too taxing. We'd love to have you." A book club. The invitation was so ordinary, so wonderfully mundane. For a moment, the old Gwen surfaced—the one who scheduled meetings with senators and orchestrated multi-million-dollar legal strategies. But she was quickly quieted by the woman I was now.

"If you're scared, wait until I leave before picking them up. One more thing, don't make up lies that sound so fake. Otherwise, people will know you live alone." And with that, he walked away. I stood frozen, my certainty unraveling. Had I really been mistaken when I saw that tattoo in the soup? After a few minutes of silence, I cracked open the door, snatched the bags inside, and shut it quickly. They really were just bags of fruit. Could Roger truly be a kindhearted man, clumsy but well-meaning? I still didn't dare eat them, but doubt gnawed at me. That was when my phone rang.

Chapter six AT LORENZO'S CLUB The room was dark, with only a few soft lights glowing around the corners. Smoke floated in the air, and slow music played in the background. “Touch me Lorenzo” Says a sexy voice behind a mask. She placed his hands on her hips. Lorenzo felt the softness of her skin. Her curves are thick and provoking. He sat in a deep red chair, while she had her legs crossed on him. Slowly she touched his chest sliding her finger down to his Zip.

I replied. "I am here in Megalopre. Can we meet at the cafe near the plaza?" She asked, and I couldn't believe she would be here too. "Of course, see you then, Alice," I said, and then I ended the call after saying goodbye to Megan's best friend, and I couldn't stop my heart from beating so fast, and it feels like destiny favors me after eight long years. I couldn't stop feeling so anxious as I waited for Alice to come. The moment she got inside the cafe, my heart danced with happiness because at last, I was going to have a clue about Megan's whereabouts, and I felt so afraid to learn the truth, but I knew it would set me free, and that is the only way to make me feel whole again.

I just want to bury anything related to her. But, while I was finally cleaning my bedroom, which she had occupied for a few months, I discovered a book on my bookshelf that she had asked me to buy previously. As I examined the book, I was surprised; I had never found any of her belongings before when looking for proof; did I simply overlook this one? I took a look at the book and discovered it was a mystery thriller; I chuckled in disbelief when I saw the title, "The Weight Of Lies." Seriously, Sierra? This was the one you chose out of all the books you could have left?

It was titled the *THE DIAMONDS* After tireless searching, she finally found it on a particular shelves that had a word engraved on its metal handles. It read, *mysteries*. She quickly grabbed the book out and sneezed repeatedly as the dust on the book found its way into her nostrils. She went to he father's old study and sat on the rusty chair while putting on the mini lamp on the table and finally in great anticipation, she opened the book.

I beamed. "Crazy, isn't it?" "Fucking crazy, for real." "First, we put THE DA VINCI CODE by DAN BROWN here." He picked out the book and inserted it in the center line of the shelf. He put HOW TO STOP TIME by MATT HAIG, followed by EVERGREEN by NAOMI HIRAHARA. "Then KISS THE GIRLS by JAMES PATTERSON." He put it next to the first book. "I've read that." I went on in a spur of excitement. "It's a thriller and mystery novel about a detective who's trying to track down a serial killer. So many twists and cliffhangers. Total page-turner." I giggled.

Jenkins, the owner of the quaint bookshop where she had spent countless hours browsing through shelves and seeking advice on rare books. "Mrs. Jenkins?" Emma's voice trembled with confusion and a hint of betrayal. "But why? You're...you're the one who's been helping us." Mrs. Jenkins' smile grew wider, her eyes glinting with a sinister light. "Oh, Emma, dear Emma. You've been so blind. I've been playing a role, just like everyone else in this game. And you, my dear, are one of the most intriguing pieces on the board." Julian's eyes narrowed, his hand instinctively reaching for his gun. "You're the one who's been behind the organization? But why? What's your endgame?"
