His Son, Her Secret
For this morning—and maybe for the mornings to come—it was enough.

A strange mechanical sound, followed by a tiny metal clang, echoed from the hallway, coming from the Max’s room.
I stood still for a second, listening.
Clank! Vrooom. Clank!
Then a familiar voice rang out, full of excitement and way too loud for six in the morning:
“OPTIMUS! MOVE OUT! WE HAVE TO SAVE THIS PLANET!”
I shook my head and stepped into the hallway.
Max’s bedroom door was ajar. I pushed the door open slowly, and there...among a pile of blankets, pillows, two giant Transformer robots, and a DIY cardboard rocket launcher, stood Max on his bed. His hair was static-crazy, his pajama shirt slipping off one shoulder.
