The Lost Pack
The voice cuts through me so sharply I physically flinch.
My hands press flat against Leo’s chest as my head snaps up, breath coming faster now.
No, that’s not how it was before. It was calm. My stomach twists.
“Did you hear that?” I whisper, as if speaking too loudly might make it worse.
Leo’s eyes narrow slightly. “Hear what?”
Right. Of course. I shake my head, but it doesn’t help. Because it’s still there.
“It should have been finished.”
A pulse of something dark and heavy rolls through me, stronger this time, and the air in the room seems to shift with it. The lamp beside us flickers violently, then shatters. Glass scatters across the floor in a sharp, echoing crash.
