DANIEL'S POV. THE NEXT DAY. I couldn't believe I'd hired that girl. She was so weird and different from anyone I'd seen before and that didn't sit well with me. My pitying self just had to look into her big eyes and give her what she wanted. Now I'm stuck with her as my maid. "What's that lady's name again?" I asked Clara who was doing her best to keep up with my stride. "Jessica Cooper," Clara said, out of breath.

The slap cracked across my face like a whip before I could finish speaking. Pain exploded across my cheek. My head snapped to the side, and I tasted blood where I'd bitten my tongue. I froze. Every muscle in my body locked down, screaming at me to retaliate, to show this woman exactly what happened when you put your hands on a princess of the Bloodmoon Kingdom. But I wasn't a princess anymore. I was a maid. And maids didn't fight back. "Watch where you're going," she snapped, "You just arrived and you're already being clumsy. Perhaps you'd like to lose your job on your first day?"

After that argument, Gianna and Matteo fell into a cold war. He stopped visiting, and she refused to reach out first. Lately, in her dreams, she kept seeing a warm family that did not exist—doting parents with relatives gathered around them. This longing was like an addiction. This was useless. Still, a task was a task, and I couldn’t argue with the Head Maid about this. This wasn’t her doing. She was also following orders, which meant that Alice could be right about Olivia’s involvement. She could have done this just to spite me. I could easily see her doing it just as she ordered those slaves to pour that hot soup on me. And to think that they would have been sent here was terrible. The living conditions were poor and I suspected that the worst of them were kept on this floor.

I had a frantic look at the dishes one by one. There was grease on one of them, there was dried sauce and then there was even a bit of leftover that had gone bad. It didn't stop with the first few I saw. No, there were mountains of them, and every movement made my back throb. My breath hitched as I dipped the first plate in soapy water and began scrubbing. They came around not long after. The other maids. They had “taken the day off,” sure… but they’d returned, leaning against the doorframe, giggling like schoolgirls. “Aw… poor Maya.
