Owen was smart enough to do it just below the threshold of what the officials were consistently calling tonight. He'd been doing it because Khyle had been doing it too. In smaller ways. With words instead of elbows. Chirping at Gunner on every shift they shared the bench, commenting on his play, his choices, his general usefulness as a human being. It had felt justified at the time, had felt like the natural extension of everything that had led to this period of the game. He understood now, watching Gunner's jaw set into that particular configuration and his eyes take on that particular quality, that he had been adding fuel to something that had been running hot all night.
