Then that shell would break to let out a creature that was hideous and scary and weird. In the process of trying to drive him away, they somehow ended up gravitating towards each other. Finding comfort in the unexpected company, deep secrets tumbling out in the middle of the night. The guy who got stranded for sightseeing was suddenly showing her perspectives she had never seen before. The girl who barely talks was suddenly telling him the things he needed to hear all his life. And the book… the book calls to her, whispers to her, its voice a seductive murmur in the back of her mind. With a deep breath, Demika opens the book. The pages are yellowed with age, the ink faded but still legible. The writing is in an ancient script, one that she has only seen in the oldest of the Wiccan texts. But as she scans the pages, the words seem to rearrange themselves before her eyes, transforming into a language she can understand.

My eyes met Varyon’s, and a flood of intense energy surged through me, like a tidal wave that shattered all barriers. I felt my bones crack one by one, a pain both sharp and liberating, as my body transformed. A howl escaped my lips, a primal scream that echoed in the air, announcing my metamorphosis. My mother didn’t speak, she just simply let the cloth fall away. The air charged more. The pressure could be felt. Kael had a horrified face staring at the book. It was entwined in vines— Blood vines. The raw power from the book pressed against my skin, my lungs, my bones—everywhere.

“As you wish. We have dealt with rogue vampires before. It’s always the same: they come to test us. To see how secure our territory is. After that, more follow. That’s how territory shifts begin. “But you see, they never get away with it. Ours is the oldest strongest and coven in this land. No one kills here and gets away with it. “So I ask again: who sent you? When do they plan to invade?” Territory? Invasions? Caitlin couldn’t understand how she was not dreaming. Maybe she had been slipped some sort of drug. Maybe Jonah had slipped her something. But she didn’t drink. And she never did drugs. She was not dreaming. This was real. Too awfully, incredibly real.
