Pressed between the pages was an old, cracked piece of parchment. They unfolded it carefully. It was a map. Crude, but unmistakably a map. Of the forest. The forest not too far from the library.

He stepped inside, eyes flicking automatically over the organized chaos of her desk—journal stacks, a half‑drunk coffee, Park’s latest draft open on the tablet. No stapler. Of course. He turned to leave and saw it. A photo, half‑tucked under a file, edge peeking out just enough to catch the eye. A small hand, smudged with blue and red crayon. A wolf drawing with too many teeth. Curiosity was a reflex he’d never successfully shut off. He reached out and slid the paper the rest of the way clear. Two sheets, actually. On top: the drawing. Three wolves—one with a small, one with bared teeth, one with a crooked leg, and a long line in its paw. Labels in wobbly, determined letters.

I withdrew my head off the headrest and moved forward to see what was written in the paper he laid down on the table, after moving the tray to one side. “Yes, your Majesty!” he pushed the table towards me and I knitted my brows, seeing what was written in the paper was not just any information, but a map of a Palace… the pack Palace. “Isn’t this the map of this Palace?” I questioned, staring deep into the map. Alpha Randale stood up at the mention of the pack Palace. He rushed up to us, checking out the map with his eyes widened in shock. “I fear it was this… My palace.” Alpha Randale gasped, turning the paper over.

That made her pause. She finished tugging on her boots, yanked the door open a crack, and accepted the folded parchment from the waiting runner. The wax seal bore a symbol she hadn’t seen in years—a stylized hawk. Her chest tightened. “Thanks,” she said gruffly. The boy nodded and retreated. Jace, now mostly dressed himself, watched her from the bed, expression sharpening. “Old friend?” he asked. “Something like that,” Talia said, breaking the seal.

But she didn’t feel that way and I wasn’t sure what to think of her. Gale pulled out a large scroll from a shelf. Placing it gently on the table, she unraveled it to reveal a large picture that didn’t make any sense to me. Then, she pinned it open. Prince Vaugn and King Ruthford gathered around her as she pointed at a corner of the scroll. “It’s called a map, little one.” Saple’s voice rumbled through my head and I smiled at him gratefully. “It’s a picture of the world.”

She coughed once more, growing weaker each time. "Fight... fight for your destiny, so it won’t be as terrible as what I saw in my vision..." Ursula murmured with effort, her voice broken, handing me a crumpled piece of paper. I held the paper in my hands, feeling the rough texture from time and handling. "What is this?" I asked, confused, looking at the paper filled with arrows and strange drawings, which seemed to trace the way to some distant place, beyond this territory.

Her eyes became more curious as she saw the torn paper in pieces, some of which were shredded. She hoped to find at least a diary, but she found something that piqued her interest.
