Maya's POV People always assume obsession begins loudly they imagine madness appearing overnight and turning ordinary people cruel in a single moment but the truth is uglier because obsession grows quietly. It starts with wanting to be chosen then wanting to matter and then wanting somebody to look at you the way they look at someone else and eventually wanting turns into needing and somewhere between need and desperation you stop recognizing yourself.

Damn, I was going to go crazy with my own thoughts. I got into the bathtub, and the water gradually helped me relax. He wasn't guilty, he wasn't guilty of anything, of that I was sure. No one wishes or deserves to go through something like that so soon. He was just a little boy. His obsession with control, his aggressive sexual desire, were all remnants of a certain disorder?

“That’s not a problem. We have a long time together. If that bastard could make you feel something after everything he did to you, then I’m sure, I’ll make you fall for me. No matter how long it takes.” A shiver ran through her spine, as a mixture of fear and disgust bloomed in the pit of her stomach. “You’re sick.” She hissed. “So much so that you can’t tell the difference between love and… obsession.” “Love, obsession, limerence, they are all the same thing.” He told her. “It’s a desire that is so strong, that it can’t be suppressed. It’s the kind of feeling that can cause a person to do things that are otherwise deemed unreasonable and unacceptable.”

It included— Classical possession: (where a demon takes over a person's body, controlling them like a puppet). Obsessive possession: (creating recurring disturbing thoughts, causing suicidal ideation). External possession: (where physical pain is caused to the subject, though they remain conscious). And finally, and most importantly, Oppressive possession:

It never ends well. Obsession is lethal. It creeps in quietly, wrapping itself around you like comfort, but it suffocates in the end. It erases who you were and replaces it with hunger. If I stay, the person I am will disappear, replaced by someone who longs for a violent man, a sadistic killer. Obsession has never been a good trait, and this one terrifies me more than he ever could. More than what happened earlier tonight. Being locked in that office was horrifying, but this is worse. This feels like addiction, deep and consuming.

His high pitched maniacal giggles occasionally filled the air in a pealing tone. Bernard’s mind was running in a chaotic loop of unhinged, delusionary, obsessive images that all ended with him doing unimaginable grotesque things that had pleasure running through him like he hadn’t felt since his first kill. The euphoric feeling rushed through him until he could no longer contain himself. He dumped the pictures all over a table in front of the couch. Threw every picture that wasn’t the woman that reminded him of his failure to break her on the floor. As he stood staring at her picture he began to unbuckle his belt. I said. “Yeah well now I’m pissed because why have you not eaten. I’m very sure that twat Ife is responsible for this. I’m sorry baby..” he said and put his hand on my face. I almost flinched away but man, I was trying very hard to be very careful with this man. He was going to snap if I did anything stupid. In his eyes I could see someone who was deranged. His mind was broken at this point. He was troubled. This frantic pursuit of me was not because he loved me but it was much deeper than that. He was obsessed. And obsession could make people do crazy things that they in their right mind would not normally do.

Dan's hand shook almost imperceptibly. "You think you loved him first?" Mathew continued, voice low and lethal. "Maybe you did. But love that has to hold a blade to someone's throat to prove itself was never love at all, Dan. It's obsession. It's the same sickness you've always mistaken for devotion." He took another step closer, close enough now that Dan could see the raw desperation beneath the fury in his eyes. "And I would know. Because I've spent years fighting the same sickness inside myself, trying not to become exactly what you are right now."
